Chapter 5 - The Fall of the PretenderThe grand ballroom was no longer a celebration. It was a courtroom, and the verdict had already been reached.

Security guards stepped forward, surrounding the stage. They didn't need to use force; Ryan was already broken, his knees trembling so violently he could barely maintain his balance. The illusion of his brilliance, his status, and his power had been stripped away in less than ten minutes, leaving behind only an ordinary, small-minded man standing in a ruined tuxedo.
"Mr. Bennett," the head of security said, stepping up to him with a pair of cold steel handcuffs glinting under the lights. "You are being detained pending a formal corporate fraud investigation and federal wire embezzlement review."
"No... no, wait!" Ryan cried out, lunging forward toward me as the guards grabbed his arms. "Victoria! Please! Don't do this! I'm your husband!"
"Not anymore," I whispered.
The guards hauled him backward toward the service exit. His frantic pleas echoed off the crystal chandeliers until the heavy doors slammed shut, cutting him off from the world he had tried so desperately to conquer.
Madison didn't wait to be asked. She grabbed her evening bag, ducked her head in utter humiliation, and bolted toward the side exit, disappearing into the rainy Manhattan night before anyone could even look her way.
The ballroom remained dead silent. Every eye turned back toward the center stage, where I stood bathed in the warm, golden glow of the spotlights.
I took a slow breath, smoothed down the front of my crimson couture gown, and stepped up to the podium.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice projecting effortlessly across the vast room. "Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate the true foundation of Sterling Global. My grandfather built this company on integrity, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to those who stand by us through every trial."
I paused, letting my gaze sweep over the sea of stunned investors and executives.
"Tonight, we close a chapter on deception and pretension," I continued, my tone ringing with absolute resolve. "Tomorrow, we begin a new era of growth. The gala will continue. Please, enjoy your evening."
As the string quartet nervously struck up a classical waltz, the tension in the room slowly began to dissipate, replaced by the hushed, awestruck murmurs of people who knew they had just witnessed history.
William Hayes stepped up beside me, handing me a crystal flute of sparkling water.
"A masterclass in execution, Madame President," William murmured with a respectful smile.

I took the glass, gazing out at the glittering skyline visible through the grand windows of the Plaza Hotel.
The ash in my backyard had already blown away in the wind. The pretender was gone. And the empire my family built was finally back where it belonged.
