Chapter 1 - The Ash and the CrownThe smell of scorched silk still hung heavy in the cool evening air of our suburban backyard. I stood motionless beside the metal barbecue pit, watching the last glowing ember of my sapphire-blue dress fade into a fragile crust of black ash. The fabric I had sacrificed meals and saved every spare dollar for over the past six months was gone, reduced to nothing by the man who had promised to protect and cherish me.

Ryan Bennett had already driven away in his leased BMW, racing toward the glittering lights of downtown Manhattan to bask in his triumph. He was heading to the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, where the highest echelons of Sterling Global—one of the largest corporations in America—were gathering to celebrate his promotion to Vice President of Operations.
He had left his wife behind, convinced she was an embarrassing burden. A tired, broken woman whose rough hands and worn-out diner uniforms no longer fit the luxurious life he believed he had earned entirely on his own merit.
He had invited Madison Harper instead. The ambitious daughter of an advisory board member, wrapped in designer velvet and dripping with silver, destined to be the trophy wife of a corporate rising star.
I turned away from the ashes, my wet eyelashes drying instantly as a cold, absolute silence settled over my chest. The tears of humiliation were gone. In their place burned a terrifying, razor-sharp clarity that had been buried beneath seven years of selfless devotion.
I walked back into the quiet, modest house, pulled my private, encrypted satellite phone from the bottom drawer of my old wooden desk, and pressed speed dial.
It answered on the first ring.

"Vance," a deep, disciplined voice replied instantly. "We’ve been monitoring the gala preparations. The board is waiting for your signal, Madame President."
"Cancel the waiting," I said, my voice cutting through the silence like broken glass. "Get the Paris couture team, the vault keys, and the private helicopter to my coordinates within twenty minutes. Ryan Bennett wanted an executive-level date for tonight. Let’s make sure he gets an audience he will never, ever forget."
