Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of SterlingThe red and blue lights of half a dozen police cruisers painted the limestone pillars of the Sterling estate in frantic, flashing strokes. The rain was finally beginning to ease into a steady, misting drizzle as federal marshals and local state troopers swarmed the grand foyer.

Victor Vance and Elena stood handcuffed against the marble fireplace where the confrontation had begun hours earlier. Elena was sobbing openly, her expensive blue silk dress stained with mud and soot from the basement, while Victor stared straight ahead with a vacant, numb expression, realizing that his meticulously constructed empire of lies had collapsed in a matter of hours.
Andrew and Clara stood near the double doors, their arms wrapped around each other, watching the authorities process the scene. Leo and Toby were curled up on the velvet sofa nearby, wrapped in warm blankets, finally fast asleep after the chaotic night, safe in the knowledge that their family was whole again.
Marcus, the head of security who had quietly turned against Victor the moment federal badges were flashed at the gates, walked over to Andrew and handed him a sealed manila envelope.
"Federal prosecutors have the original ledger, Mr. Sterling," Marcus reported professionally. "The digital mirror drives from Victor’s office have been secured. They won't even see bail."
"Thank you, Marcus," Andrew said quietly, nodding to the man. "Take the rest of the night off. We'll handle things from here."
As Marcus walked away, the heavy front doors closed, leaving a profound, peaceful quiet settle over the foyer for the first time in three years.
Andrew turned to Clara, taking her face in his hands. His thumbs gently brushed across her cheekbones, tracing every contour as if convincing himself that she was real, flesh and blood, standing right in front of him.
"You planned all of this," Andrew said, a soft, amazed smile breaking across his face. "Even down to getting hired through the agency."
"I needed to know if you still cared," Clara confessed softly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I needed to know if the man I married was still buried under the grief and the corporate armor."
"I was dead, Clara," Andrew whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "For three years, I was just a ghost going through the motions. You didn't just come back to expose Victor. You brought me back to life."
May you like
Clara leaned into his palm, closing her eyes as she let out a long, shuddering breath of absolute relief. "We have a lot of lost time to make up for, Andrew. The boys need a bedtime story, and I happen to know one they like very much."
Andrew pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair, breathing in the familiar scent of lavender and home that he had thought was lost forever to the ash.
