Chapter 4 - The Morning After the Empire CollapsedBy 8:30 AM the next morning, the financial news networks were in a feeding frenzy.

BLOOMBERG: VALE GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIES ASSETS FROZEN AMID FRAUD ALLEGATIONS.

WALL STREET JOURNAL: SUDDEN REPLEVIN ACTION STUNS TECH SECTOR ON EVE OF PLANNED IPO.

CNBC: INVESTORS DEMAND RESIDENCY OF CEO ADRIEN VALE FOLLOWING FORENSIC AUDIT DISCLOSURES.

In the penthouse suite of the Lucent Crown—which Adrien had rented for the wedding weekend—the air was thick with the acrid scent of stale scotch and burnt espresso.

Adrien stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Central Park, his tuxedo jacket discarded hours ago, his white dress shirt wrinkled and untucked. His phone was vibrating so violently against the marble coffee table that it sounded like an insect trapped in a jar.

He didn't answer it. He couldn't.

Every single major investor had called overnight demanding their money back. Mark Sterling had sent a formal notice of default, threatening immediate criminal referral to the U.S. Attorney’s office for wire fraud and securities manipulation. The board of directors had held an emergency virtual meeting at 4:00 AM, unanimously voting to strip Adrien of his executive powers and place the entire corporation under court-appointed receivership.

And Camille?

She was gone. When Adrien woke up at sunrise, her silver silk dress was crumpled on the guest room floor, her makeup bag was missing, and the diamond bracelet—his mother's... no, Elise’s mother’s bracelet—was sitting coldly on the nightstand with a sticky note attached: Can't be associated with a federal indictment. Good luck, A.

"Damn it!" Adrien roared, sweeping his hand across the marble table and sending crystal glasses, coffee cups, and his phone crashing against the wall in a shower of shrapnel.

The heavy oak door of the suite unlocked.

Adrien spun around, his bloodshot eyes widening with desperate hope, thinking his legal team had finally arrived with a miracle injunction.

Instead, it was Vanessa.

She walked into the penthouse with the calm, unhurried grace of an absolute owner. She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit, a crisp white silk blouse, and carried no folders this time—only a sleek leather briefcase.

Adrien stared at her, his chest heaving, his mouth working silently for a few seconds before he found his voice.

"You..." he whispered, his voice trembling with a toxic cocktail of rage, shock, and pathetic disbelief. "You did this. You planned this whole thing behind my back."

"I didn't do anything behind your back, Adrien," Vanessa said, stopping ten feet away from him, her hands clasped loosely in front of her. "I did it right in front of you. You were just too busy playing the charismatic tech god to notice that the foundation of your empire was built out of paper."

"We can fix this!" Adrien took a desperate step toward her, his hands outstretched in a pathetic gesture of supplication. His voice cracked, the smooth, arrogant veneer completely melted away, revealing the terrified, small-minded boy underneath. "Vanessa, please. We've been together for seven years! We built this! Talk to Mark Sterling. Tell him it's just a misunderstanding, a marital dispute. You can drop the receivership action. We can still get married—we can fly to Cabo this afternoon, just you and me—"

Vanessa looked at him. Really looked at him.

She didn't feel anger. She didn't feel pity. She felt a profound, liberating emptiness, as if she were staring at a discarded piece of trash left on the sidewalk.

"Adrien," she said softly, her voice cutting through his desperate rambling like a scalpel. "The locks on the downtown office were changed at 6:00 AM. Your corporate credit cards have been deactivated. And the federal marshals are currently executing a search warrant on your personal server."

She stepped past him, walking toward the master bedroom.

"What... what are you doing?" he stammered, spinning around to watch her.

"Picking up the last of my things," Vanessa said without slowing down. "Though, to be honest, there's nothing of mine left in this place worth keeping."
