Chapter 5 - The Final Confrontation“Lock down the residential wing,” Elias commanded into the intercom, his voice dropping into that lethal, aristocratic register that made men tremble. “Seal the nursery doors with the ballistic shutters. Do not let anyone—under any circumstances—reach this hallway.”

“Already on it, Boss,” Marcus replied. “My team is moving up the stairwell now. We’ll cut him off at the foyer.”
Elias turned away from the intercom and strode quickly across the nursery toward the master suite. I stood up, clutching Maya tightly to my chest while Chloe began to stir and cry softly in her crib from the sudden tension in the air.
“Elias, wait,” I called out, my voice shaking. “Don't go out there alone. If he has a gun—”
“He won't get within fifty feet of this nursery, Ava,” Elias interrupted, turning back for a fraction of a second. His gray eyes burned with a cold, terrifying resolve. “I spent my entire life making sure no one could ever take away what is mine. I am not about to start tonight.”
With those words, he disappeared through the connecting door into the master suite, sliding the heavy reinforced security panel shut behind him with a dull, heavy thud.
I stood in the center of the nursery, rocking both crying babies as the muffled sounds of shouting echoed faintly from the distant foyer through the thick walls.
Minutes stretched into agonizing hours. Every second felt like a lifetime as I prayed silently, pacing between the crib and the window, watching the glittering lights of Manhattan stretch out endlessly into the dark winter night.
Then, suddenly, the gunfire started.
Pop. Pop-pop.
Suppressed pistol shots, muffled but unmistakable, reverberated through the ventilation shafts.
A sharp cry escaped my lips, and I pulled my daughters closer, pressing my face into their soft hair as hot tears streamed down my cheeks. Please, I prayed to whatever gods were listening. Don't let him die. Don't let them take this sanctuary away.
Then, silence.
Absolute, heavy silence descended upon the penthouse once more.
Ten agonizing minutes passed before the heavy security panel of the nursery door slid open with a pneumatic hiss.
I spun around, my heart in my throat, raising my arm defensively.
Elias stepped through the doorway.
His suit jacket was gone, his white dress shirt stained with a smear of dark oil near the cuff, but he stood completely upright, his breathing steady, his eyes locked onto mine with fierce, unyielding intensity.
Behind him in the hallway, Marcus and two security guards could be seen escorting a handcuffed, struggling man toward the service elevator.
“It’s over,” Elias said softly, his voice dropping all its defensive armor as he walked toward me across the nursery floor. “The intruder has been neutralized and handed over to federal custody. No one will ever threaten you or your daughters again.”
The sheer weight of the terror, the grief, and the exhaustion of the past year finally shattered inside my chest. My knees buckled beneath me, and I would have hit the floor if Elias hadn't reached out instantly, catching me in his arms along with the babies.

He pulled us all against his chest, burying his face in my hair as his strong arms wrapped around us like an impenetrable fortress.
“You’re safe, Ava,” he whispered against my temple, his voice trembling slightly for the very first time. “You are home.”
