Chapter 5 - The Gathering StormBy summer, our lives had settled into a rhythm of breathtaking beauty and quiet power.

The West Village brownstone had been fully renovated into a sun-drenched family home, though we still split our time between there and the penthouse. Elena and Sophia were crawling now, filling our days with endless laughter, tiny footsteps, and the chaotic charm of motherhood.
I had officially taken over the executive directorship of Vance Philanthropic Holdings, channeling millions of dollars into women’s shelters, neonatal care research, and legal aid clinics for victims of domestic abuse across New York State. My name was no longer a ghost; it was a symbol of resilience, strength, and hope.
But in the underworld, power always attracts scavengers.
One evening in early July, while Elias was attending a high-level summit with the European shipping delegates in downtown Manhattan, my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter of the brownstone.
It was an unknown number.
I picked it up, expecting a routine business call from my logistics coordinator.
"Hello?"
"Well, well, well," rasped a harsh, unfamiliar voice through the receiver—a voice dripping with malice. "If it isn't Mrs. Vance's little ghost."
My blood ran cold. "Who is this?"
"Someone who thinks Victor Marcone's empire shouldn't have fallen just because a couple of low-level lieutenants got locked away," the man laughed darkly. "Marcone is rotting in a federal cell, sure. But his cousins from the Chicago syndicate just flew in. And they want to know why a random nobody like Ava Miller is sitting on top of fifty million dollars in real estate assets funded by Elias Vance."
"If you come anywhere near my children—" I began, my voice shaking with a surge of protective fury.
"Oh, we're already near them, sweetcheeks," the voice interrupted. "Check your front steps."
The line clicked dead.
Panic seized my chest. I dropped the phone, bolted through the hallway, and threw open the heavy oak front door of the brownstone.
Sitting on the top stone step of our porch was a small, crudely wrapped package tied with rough twine.
May you like
My hands trembled violently as I picked it up, carrying it inside and locking the reinforced deadbolts behind me. I unwrapped the twine in the entryway. Inside sat a small, polished silver baby rattle—and a handwritten note scrawled in jagged red ink:
The boss wants his territory back. Tell Vance to meet us at Pier 48 tonight at midnight. Come alone, or the twins get traded to the highest bidder.
