Chapter 2 - The Grounding of Vance IndustriesInside the chartered cabin, the atmosphere was thick with self-congratulatory triumph.

Carter took a slow sip of vintage champagne, letting his arm drape casually over the armrest where Khloe was still giggling behind her menu. The sixty executives, lead engineers, and regional managers filling the economy and business sections of the aircraft were laughing amongst themselves, relieved that the “spoiled socialite wife” had finally stomped off to sulk in the terminal.
Eleanor dabbed her lips with a silk napkin, leaning over to her son. “See, Carter? You handled her perfectly. If you let women walk all over you, they forget who wears the pants. Letting her walk away teaches her a lesson. She’ll be begging to come back by nightfall.”
Carter smirked, swirling the golden liquid in his crystal glass. “Samantha has always been overly dramatic. A few hours alone in the terminal will do her good. Once we land in Zurich for the European tech summit, she’ll fall back in line.”
He raised his glass to toast his executive team. “To Vance Industries! Next stop, global market dominance!”
A chorus of cheers echoed through the cabin. Employees clinked their glasses together, praising Carter’s visionary leadership and firm hand.
Suddenly, the celebratory mood evaporated.
The ambient cabin lighting flickered, dropped to a dull emergency amber, and completely shut off. The high-pitched whine of the twin jet engines wound down from a powerful, throaty roar to a low, dying wheeze. The massive entertainment screens mounted along the bulkhead blinked black, replaced by a cold, flashing red warning code: SYSTEM OVERRIDE – AUTHENTICATION REVOKED.
“What the hell?” the pilot’s voice crackled over the intercom, tight with confusion and rising panic. “Control tower, this is Flight 889—we’ve just lost primary avionics power and hydraulic authorization. Tower, do you copy?”
From the front control tower of Denver International, a sharp voice responded over the radio, echoing faintly into the main cabin speakers: “Vance Flight 889, your charter contract has been unilaterally revoked by the primary stakeholder. Fuel pumping rights have been rescinded. You are ordered to taxi back to the private hangar immediately. Permission to takeoff is canceled.”
Silence descended upon the cabin so heavy you could hear a pin drop.
Carter stood up so fast his champagne flute flew from his hand, shattering against the aisle carpet. His face drained of color, his jaw slack. “Canceled? What are they talking about? I personally wired the charter fee yesterday!”
Khloe’s orange slice tumbled from her fingers onto the floor. “Mr. Sterling... what’s happening? Why are the engines stopping?”
Before Carter could answer, his personal smartphone—the one wired directly to Vanguard’s corporate treasury—began to ring incessantly. Then it buzzed again with a text notification. Then another. Within five seconds, his phone was vibrating across the mahogany armrest like an angry hornet.
With trembling fingers, Carter grabbed the device.
The notifications weren't normal alerts. They were system-wide emergency flags:
CRITICAL WARNING: Primary operating account ending in 4092 has been frozen by order of the Board of Trustees.
CRITICAL WARNING: 1.5 Billion Dollar emergency credit facility recalled in full. Immediate liquidation initiated.

CRITICAL WARNING: Intellectual property rights for Patents 01 through 13 revoked due to breach of foundational trust.
Carter stared at the screen, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror as the numbers flashed red, wiping his corporate valuation down to absolute zero in real-time.
