Chapter 2 - The Fall of the PretenderWhile Richard and Eleanor enveloped me in a tearful, protective embrace right in the center of the Arlington Manor ballroom—transforming my night of deepest humiliation into the most profound turning point of my life—Julian Vance was dumped unceremoniously onto the damp concrete of the hotel’s rear loading dock.

The two security guards tossed his designer leather jacket after him like trash.
“Get up,” the lead guard growled. “And if Mr. Kensington ever sees you within five miles of Miss Kensington again, you won't just lose your job. You’ll lose your teeth.”
The heavy steel service door slammed shut, leaving Julian alone in the dark alleyway behind the multi-million-dollar hotel.
For several minutes, Julian sat on an empty wooden pallet, his brain refusing to process the math. Elena? A Kensington? The granddaughter of the man who literally controlled half the infrastructure of the American South?
It was impossible. It had to be a cruel hoax. For three years, Julian had treated Elena like a piece of inherited furniture—convenient for keeping his apartment clean, useful for doing his laundry, but utterly worthless in the currency of high society. He had sneered at her cheap navy dresses, mocked her quiet demeanor, and hidden her away at every corporate function because he believed she dragged down his market value.
And now, the billionaire patriarch he had spent six months groveling to kiss up to was currently holding Elena’s hands inside the ballroom, weeping tears of joy over a piece of flea-market junk.
Julian scrambled to his feet, brushed off his trousers with trembling hands, and rushed around to the front entrance, desperate to fix the situation. He rehearsed his lines in his head: It was all a misunderstanding! I was testing her resilience! I love my wife deeply!
As he reached the grand marble steps, two hotel security officers stepped out, blocking his path.
“Name?” the guard asked coldly.
“Julian Vance! Vice President of Strategic Acquisitions at Apex Global! My wife is inside—!”
“Mr. Vance,” the guard interrupted flatly, holding up an encrypted tablet. “We received explicit instructions from Mr. Kensington’s office five minutes ago. Your company badge has been deactivated, your invitation is revoked, and your corporate partnership contract with Whitmore Corporation has been terminated effective immediately.”
Julian’s jaw dropped. “Terminated? You can’t do that! That contract represents sixty percent of Apex Global’s annual revenue! My CEO will—!”

“Your CEO was already informed by phone,” the guard cut him off with a grim smile. “In fact, as of three minutes ago, your CEO voted unanimously to terminate you to save the firm from being dragged down by association. Clean out your desk by morning.”
Julian stood paralyzed under the glaring porch lights of the hotel, the reality crashing down with the crushing weight of a collapsing skyscraper. In less than an hour, he had gone from an ambitious corporate climber on the verge of total social triumph to a jobless, disgraced pariah—all because he had ordered the granddaughter of the richest man in Texas to stand near the kitchen.
