Chapter 4: The Eviction and the Legal Hammer

As I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows watching the snow dust the Denver streets below, the front service door clicked open, and Ryan stumbled into the penthouse, looking disheveled, hollow-eyed, and desperate. He had clearly rushed over the moment he heard the building management had lifted his access key cards. "Claire! Please, you have to listen to me!" he cried, rushing forward before the deputies intercepted him, pinning his arms behind his back. "Dad didn't mean to burn you—he was drunk, we were all stressed! And the money... we were just investing it for our future family! Please drop the charges!" I turned slowly from the window, looking down at the man I had trusted with my youth and my heart with absolute, freezing indifference. "You held my wrists while your father burned my skin, Ryan," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet penthouse like a surgical blade. "You stole my money, you lied to my face, and you treated me like property. Enjoy your stay in the county jail, because the only place you'll be seeing me from now on is across a courtroom divider."
