Chapter 1 - The Forbidden IncisionThe high-ceilinged penthouse quieted down into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the harsh, irregular rasp of Gabriel Moretti’s breathing and the low hum of the medical monitors.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the Chicago skyline sparkled under a cold night sky, but inside the room, fifty-eight stories up, the air felt thick with fever, sweat, and betrayal.
I stood beside the bed, my gloves stained with sterile saline, staring down at the low back incision.
The primary scar near his left shoulder was rough, surrounded by healing tissue—consistent with a bullet graze. But three inches below it sat a second, clean surgical incision, roughly two inches long, closed with black silk sutures. It was inflamed, red around the edges, and oozing a thin, clear fluid.
"Luca," I said softly, my voice firm as steel. "Look at this."
Luca Ferraro stepped closer, his hand coming off his concealed shoulder holster for the first time. His broken nose twitched as he leaned over Gabriel’s back. When his eyes caught the second scar, the color drained from his weathered face.
"What is that?" Luca rasped, his voice dropping an octave. "Dr. Vale said he only worked on the shoulder wound."
"Dr. Vale lied," I replied, pressing two gloved fingers gently against the skin surrounding the second incision. Gabriel’s whole body shuddered, a low guttural groan tearing from his throat as his fingers dug into the silk sheets. "This wasn't a bullet extraction. Someone performed a targeted procedure right over his lumbar spine. This is why his legs aren't working, Luca. They didn't just remove a fragment—they intentionally damaged or compressed his spinal nerve roots."
Gabriel slowly turned his head on the sweat-drenched pillow. His storm-gray eyes, though clouded with a 103.8-degree fever, burned with a lethal, terrifying clarity.
"Vincent..." Gabriel whispered again, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles along his cheekbones throbbed. "He brought... Dr. Vale to the private clinic."
Luca took a half-step back, his fists clenching until his knuckles turned white. "Vincent said Vale was the best trauma surgeon on our payroll. He said... he said it was the only safe place to operate without the police getting involved."
"It was a trap," I said, grabbing a sterile scalpel and forceps from the emergency tray. "The fever isn't coming from the gunshot. There's a localized, deep-tissue infection underneath this second incision. They left a foreign object inside him to cause slow paralysis and systemic sepsis."
Luca reached for his radio. "I'll call the family guards upstairs—"
"No!" I snapped, grabbing his arm. "If Vincent arranged the surgery, who do you think guards the private elevator downstairs? Who controls the security feed for this penthouse?"
Luca froze, his eyes narrowing as the reality of the situation hit him like a physical blow. "Half the security detail on this floor was hand-picked by Vincent after the shooting."
"Which means if you make one wrong call, Dr. Vale and Vincent won't wait for the fever to finish him," I looked down at Gabriel, whose gaze was locked onto mine. "They'll come up here and finish it themselves."
Gabriel’s fingers reached out again, wrapping around my forearm with surprising, fierce strength.
"Fix it," Gabriel rasped, his eyes burning into mine. "Fix me... and I'll make you untouchable in this city."
May you like
I didn't care about being untouchable. I cared about keeping a man from dying on my watch.
"Hold him down, Luca," I ordered, picking up the antiseptic scrub. "I'm opening these stitches."
