Chapter 6 - The Unbroken LightSix months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over the rolling green lawns of our private estate in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

The air was warm, smelling of fresh grass and blooming cherry blossoms.
I sat on the wide stone terrace overlooking the garden, sipping a glass of fresh lemonade, watching Julian run across the lawn with Emma on his shoulders. Our four-year-old daughter was giggling hysterically, her dark curls flying in the breeze as Julian spun her around in circles before gently setting her down on the grass.
Emma ran straight up the terrace steps, throwing her small arms around my legs.
“Mommy! Dad says we’re going to the beach this weekend!” she announced proudly, her bright hazel eyes sparkling with joy.
“Is that so?” I laughed, scooping her up into my lap, kissing her soft cheek.
Julian walked up the steps, pulling off his sunglasses, his dark hair slightly messy from playing. He leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my lips, before sitting on the wicker chair beside me.
“The final legal reports came in from the federal court this morning,” Julian said softly, holding my hand.
I looked at him, raising an eyebrow. “And?”
“Marcus accepted a formal plea bargain,” Julian revealed cleanly. “Eight years in federal prison, complete forfeiture of all personal assets, and ten million dollars in court-ordered restitution to the victims of his fraud.”
I looked out over the quiet garden, watching the butterflies dance among the cherry blossoms.
Five years ago, when Marcus Mercer had told me that leaving me was the smartest thing he had ever done, I had felt a brief, distant sting of old memories.
Now, looking at the life I had built—at the brilliant, honorable husband who adored me, at the beautiful daughter who filled our home with laughter, and at the untouchable career I had constructed with my own intellect—I realized the ultimate truth.
Marcus hadn't destroyed my life when he walked away.
He had simply stepped out of the way so my real life could begin.
“Thank you, Julian,” I whispered, leaning my head against my husband’s shoulder.
“For what, my love?” he asked, wrapping his strong arm around my waist, pulling me close.

“For looking for me by the cake that night,” I smiled, looking up into his steadfast gray eyes.
Julian laughed—a deep, warm sound that filled the terrace—and held me tightly against his chest as the spring sun bathed our world in unbroken, everlasting light.
