Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Shadow HeirBy 2:00 AM, the penthouse was transformed into a high-security tactical command center.

Outside the private elevator banks, eight elite guards loyal to Gabriel—vetted personally by Luca—patrolled the hallway with suppressed submachine guns. Inside the master suite, I had successfully drained the localized spinal infection, flushed the synthetic inhibitor, and administered a targeted antibiotic cocktail.

Gabriel’s fever dropped to 99.4 degrees within two hours. Color returned to his severe, handsome face, and by 3:30 AM, he sat upright on the edge of the bed, flexing his powerful broad shoulders, tests confirming that sensation was rapidly returning to his legs.

Standing across the room was Bridget Colton, senior managing partner of Colton & Vance International and Gabriel’s personal legal representative, alongside Marcus Vance, chief of Vance Global Security.

Bridget opened a heavy, red-sealed leather binder, sliding digital financial ledgers onto the glass coffee table toward Gabriel and me:

THE SPINAL TOXIN DOSSIER: Medical lab reports confirming Dr. Adrian Vale was paid $4 million via offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands registered to Vincent Moretti.

THE EMBEZZLEMENT LOG: Bank registries documenting Vincent diverting $120 million from the Moretti Maritime Trust over fourteen days while Gabriel was incapacitated.

THE BENNETT LAND TRUST: Original deeds proving that my late father, Arthur Bennett, had held a fifty-one percent controlling common stock equity over the South Chicago Commercial Docks—assets Vincent had stolen after my father’s mysterious death six years ago.

My stomach dropped into a cold void. I stared at the documents, my breath catching in my throat.

"My father's land trust...?" I whispered, looking up at Bridget.

"Yes, Clara," Bridget revealed softly. "Your father didn't die of natural causes six years ago. Vincent Moretti falsified his medical records and stole his commercial berths to set up his illegal shipping routes."

Gabriel stood up from the bed. His six-foot-three frame was magnificent, squared, radiating an absolute, untouchable authority that filled the vast room. He walked slowly across the hardwood floor on steady legs, stopping right beside my chair.

He laid a large, warm, calloused hand over my shoulder, his storm-grey eyes locked onto mine with an unshakeable, profound intensity.

"You came into this room to treat a fever, Clara," Gabriel said, his deep baritone dipping into an iron promise. "And you uncovered the murder of your father and the treason of my cousin. Today, we take back what belongs to both of us."
