Chapter 1 - The Hidden IncisionThe air inside the penthouse suite on the fifty-eighth floor of the Moretti Tower felt frozen. Beyond the floor-to-ceiling glass, Chicago was a sprawling grid of glittering lights, but inside, the only sound was the harsh, rattling breath of the man lying on the broad king-sized bed.

My name is Clara Bennett. At thirty-six, after ten years of trauma nursing and private emergency care, I had seen enough blood, arrogance, and panic to remain unimpressed by powerful men. But standing over Gabriel Moretti—the thirty-nine-year-old head of the most feared syndicate in the Midwest—I felt a cold prickle of professional alarm.

The second surgical scar on his lower back wasn't from a gunshot wound. It was small, neatly sewn with black monofilament sutures, and positioned directly over his right lumbar region—inches away from his spine and completely unrelated to the shoulder entry wound.

"Luca," I said softly, my voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "Who performed the second procedure?"

Luca Ferraro, the six-foot-three chief of security whose face usually resembled carved granite, backed half a step toward the bedroom door. His hand hovered nervously inside his charcoal jacket.

"There was no second procedure," Luca stammered, his eyes darting frantically from the scar to Gabriel’s grey, sweat-soaked face. "Dr. Adrian Vale said he only operated once at the private clinic in Oakbrook to clear the shoulder fragment."

"Dr. Vale lied," I replied flatly, pulling my stethoscope from around my neck. "Look at the tissue inflammation. This lower incision is infected. It's leaking a clear, synthetic fluid, and it's pressing directly against his spinal nerve cluster. That’s why his legs stopped working."

Gabriel’s fingers twitched against the crisp white sheets. His storm-grey eyes fluttered open, burning through the haze of a 103.8-degree fever as he locked his gaze onto mine.

"Vincent..." Gabriel rasped, his voice barely a ragged whisper. "Vincent brought... the private surgeon..."

"Your cousin Vincent," I clarified, gently pressing my fingers beside the lower stitches. Gabriel flinched, a low, iron-hard groan escaping his throat as his knuckles turned white against the mattress. "Vincent told your security detail that you were recovering from a simple gunshot wound while he systematically introduced a slow-release neurological toxin into your spine."

Luca’s face went paper-white. "Dear God... Vincent took over executive operations at Moretti Global ten days ago. He told the syndicate elders that Gabriel was permanently paralyzed and incompetent to lead."

"He didn't just want him paralyzed, Luca," I said, drawing a sterile syringe from my medical kit. "He wanted him dead before the monthly board audit."

I looked down at Gabriel. The feared mafia boss was looking up at me—not with the rage of a dying predator, but with a sudden, sharp clarity.

"Can you fix it?" Gabriel growled, his voice rough as gravel.

May you like

"I can flush the toxin and stabilize your spine right now," I answered, my hazel eyes meeting his without a flinch. "But if I do, Vincent will know the moment your fever drops. You have six hours before his men come to check if you're breathing."

Gabriel’s lips curved into a cold, lethal line. "Then give me the shot, Nurse Bennett. And let’s prepare for a family reunion."
