Chapter 6 - The Final SentenceThree months later.

The New York County Supreme Court was packed to capacity for the formal sentencing of Daniel Whitmore.
Journalists, corporate executives, and curious onlookers crammed into the wooden pews, eager to witness the final chapter of the scandal that had captivated Manhattan high society.
I sat in the front row, wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue tailored suit, flanked by my father and our legal team. I looked pristine, composed, and radiant—the picture of an undisputed corporate titan.
At 10:00 AM, the side doors opened, and Daniel Whitmore was led into the courtroom in handcuffs and leg shackles.
He was wearing an orange prison jumpsuit. His head was shaved, his posture hunched, and his face sunken and hollow. He didn't look like a high-flying corporate executive anymore. He looked like what he truly was: a convicted thief.
As he was led to the defense table, his eyes darted nervously toward the gallery. He didn't find Vanessa Cole—she had fled the state weeks ago, broke and blacklisted from every social circle in the country.
Instead, his eyes landed on me.
I met his gaze without flinching. There was no anger in my eyes, no vengeance, and no lingering pain. Only absolute, cold indifference. That was the moment Daniel realized he no longer had any power over me. He was completely, utterly powerless.
The judge pounded his gavel, bringing the room to order.
"Mr. Whitmore," Judge Henderson said, his deep voice booming across the silent courtroom. "You were given every advantage in life. You married into a honorable, successful family, held a position of high trust, and enjoyed a life of privilege. Yet, driven by unbridled greed and vanity, you systematically betrayed your spouse, embezzled millions from her family's enterprise, and attempted to flaunt your stolen wealth in the most arrogant manner imaginable."
Daniel hung his head, his shoulders shaking as he wept silently.
"The plea agreement reached between your counsel and the District Attorney recommends twelve years," Judge Henderson continued, looking over his spectacles at the defense table. "Given the magnitude of your fraud, the lack of genuine remorse prior to your capture, and the calculating nature of your actions, this court sees no reason to offer leniency."
The judge raised his eyes, fixing a stern glare on Daniel.
"I sentence you, Daniel Whitmore, to twelve years in the State Correctional Facility, followed by five years of mandatory supervised probation. Furthermore, a restitution order of fourteen point two million dollars is hereby enacted against all present and future assets you may ever possess. Remand the defendant."
Gavel strikes.
The courtroom erupted into a flurry of camera flashes and murmured chatter.
As the guards grabbed Daniel’s arms to pull him away toward the holding cells, he turned his head toward me one last time.

"Emily!" he cried out, his voice cracking with desperation as he was dragged away. "Emily, I'm sorry! Please!"
I didn't say a word. I simply stood up, smoothed down my jacket, and turned my back on him as he was led down into the dark hallway below the court.
