Chapter 3 - The Desperate PleaBy 10:00 AM the following morning, the news of Daniel Whitmore’s humiliating arrest at Aurum House had shattered the upper crust of Manhattan society.

The tabloids were having a field day. Front-page headlines displayed high-resolution photos of Daniel being loaded into a police cruiser, while a sobbing Vanessa Cole tried to cover her face with a two-thousand-dollar handbag that didn't even belong to her.
I walked into the corner executive suite of Hayes Global Enterprises wearing a tailored charcoal power suit, my dark hair pulled back into a sleek, severe bun. The staff stood at attention as I walked past, their respect no longer born out of politeness, but out of genuine awe. They knew the meek, quiet Emily was gone forever.
I had just sat down behind my desk when my assistant, Sarah, knocked nervously on the door.
"Ms. Hayes... there's someone here to see you. She doesn't have an appointment, but she's causing a scene in the lobby."
I raised an eyebrow. "Vanessa Cole?"
"Yes, ma'am," Sarah confirmed, looking uncomfortable. "Security is ready to remove her, but she claims she won't leave until she speaks with you."
A cool, amused smile touched my lips. "Let her in, Sarah. And make sure two security guards stand inside the room."
Thirty seconds later, the double oak doors swung open.
Vanessa Cole looked nothing like the polished, triumphant mistress who had sneered at me outside the courthouse yesterday. Her designer silk blouse was wrinkled, her mascara was smeared beneath her swollen red eyes, and her hands were shaking so hard she could barely hold her leather purse.
"Emily!" Vanessa gasped, rushing forward until my two security guards stepped into her path, blocking her two feet from my desk. "Emily, please! You have to talk to the police! You have to drop the charges!"
I casually took a sip of my morning tea, setting the porcelain cup down with a soft, deliberate click.
"I didn't file criminal charges against Daniel, Vanessa," I said smoothly, leaning back in my executive leather chair. "The State of New York and Aurum House filed them. I simply updated my private security protocols."
"You ruined him!" Vanessa sobbed, clutching her hands together in a desperate plea. "He's sitting in a filthy cell! The bank repossessed his sports car this morning, and the landlord of our penthouse gave us an eviction notice! They said if the fraud charges aren't dropped by five o'clock today, he’ll face up to twenty years in federal prison!"
"Twenty years?" I hummed thoughtfully. "That sounds appropriate for fourteen million dollars in grand larceny and corporate embezzlement."
Vanessa froze, her tear-stained face flushing pale white. "W-what... what fourteen million?"
"Did you really think Daniel was paying for your luxury trips to Paris, your Cartier bracelets, and your designer wardrobes with his own money, Vanessa?" I asked, looking at her with genuine pity. "Daniel made a hundred and twenty thousand dollars a year working as a mid-level manager at my firm. Every single dollar he spent on you was stolen from my family's European accounts."
"No... no!" Vanessa shook her head frantically, denial ripping through her voice. "He told me he was an independent investor! He told me he was richer than you! He said you were holding him back!"
"He lied to you," I said coldly, standing up from my chair and walking around the desk until I stood right in front of her. "Just like he lied to me for three years. The only difference is, I owned the house he was sleeping in. You were just his accomplice."
Vanessa looked into my eyes, searching for a single shred of mercy, a grain of female solidarity, or even a flicker of anger. But she found only ice.
"Please, Emily," Vanessa whimpered, dropping to her knees on the marble floor. "I’ll give back the dresses. I’ll give back the jewelry he bought me! Just don't destroy my life too! My reputation is ruined! No firm in New York will hire me!"

I looked down at her, remembering how she had laughed when Daniel told me “Some women just don’t know how to keep a husband.”
"You wanted my life, Vanessa," I whispered softly, leaning down to meet her gaze. "Now you can have the rest of it. Get out of my office."
