Chapter 6 - The Blood on the PavementIt happened three nights later.

Vincent and I were working late in his penthouse apartment on the top floor of the Marlowe Tower, reviewing the final structural restructuring of the Chicago shipping logistics transfer. The apartment was a fortress of floor-to-ceiling glass, reinforced steel doors, and private biometric elevators.

Suddenly, the secure encrypted terminal on Vincent’s desk flashed a blinding crimson alert.

Warning: Perimeter Breach - Subterranean Level 3.

Vincent stood up instantly from his leather chair, his hand sliding beneath his suit jacket toward his concealed firearm with terrifying speed.

“Stay behind the reinforced glass partition, Claire,” Vincent ordered, his voice dropping into combat mode.

“No,” I said, grabbing my encrypted tablet. “The Chicago faction is routing an electronic override through our primary firewall. If I don't quarantine the mainframe right now, they’ll lock down the entire building’s security grid.”

Before Vincent could argue, the private elevator chime echoed through the penthouse—not with the polite single ding of an authorized keycard, but with a harsh, repetitive alarm.

Clang. Clang. Clang.

The elevator doors shuddered.

Vincent positioned himself squarely in front of my desk, raising his pistol, his eyes locked on the sliding metal doors.

The doors slowly ground open.

There were no armed assassins pouring out. There was no tactical assault team.

Standing alone in the center of the elevator car was Evan.

His clothes were drenched in dark, heavy blood. His face was pale, his eyes wide and unseeing, and his right hand was wrapped loosely around the grip of a silenced pistol that hung at his side.

“Evan?!” I gasped, stepping out from behind the partition.

Vincent didn't lower his weapon. “Evan, drop the gun right now. What have you done?”

Evan slowly raised his head, looking past his father’s shoulder straight at me. A weak, bloody cough racked his chest, and crimson bubbled over his lips.

“They... they didn't want the syndicate, Dad,” Evan whispered, his knees finally buckling beneath him. He hit the marble floor of the elevator with a heavy, sickening thud. “They wanted... everything.”

Vincent vaulted across the room, dropping to his knees beside his son, pressing his hands against the massive gunshot wound tearing through Evan’s chest.

“Evan! Who did this?!” Vincent roared, pressing down hard to stem the arterial bleeding.

Evan’s hand reached out blindly across the marble floor, his fingers brushing against my shoe. His lips parted, his eyes glazing over as the final breath rattled out of his lungs.

“...Marcus... wasn't working alone...”

And with those final words, Evan Marlowe’s hand went completely limp, his fingers sliding off my shoe as his life slipped away into the cold marble floor.

The penthouse fell into a terrifying, deafening silence, broken only by the hum of the cooling servers and the relentless flashing of the red perimeter alarm.

Marcus hadn't been acting as a lone wolf. The Chicago faction had already infiltrated our inner circle deeper than anyone had calculated, and they had used Evan as a pawn to strike at the heart of the Marlowe family.

Vincent knelt beside his dead son for a long, agonizing moment, his broad shoulders trembling slightly beneath his tailored jacket.

When he finally stood up, the man I knew—the man who loved me, protected me, and shared my soul—was entirely gone.

In his place stood a monster of pure, unadulterated vengeance.
