Chapter 4 - The Digital SiegeBy midnight, the digital war had begun.

We were sitting in Marcus’s private command center—a high-tech subterranean room lined with glowing monitors displaying global network traffic, server loads, and encrypted communication channels.
Evelyn stood beside a massive curved display, her fingers flying across a mechanical keyboard as red warning banners flashed across the screens.
“Sir, we have multiple brute-force penetration attempts originating from three distinct server farms in Zurich, Singapore, and the Cayman Islands,” Evelyn reported crisply. “They’re trying to bypass our firewall using an old Apex-era back-door protocol.”
Marcus stood behind her, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes narrowed as he watched the data streams cascade down the monitors.
“They’re using the legacy encryption key,” Marcus muttered, realizing the strategy instantly. “They think the key is stored locally on a physical drive tied to Robert Carter’s bloodline. They think Emily has it.”
“Do you?” Evelyn asked, glancing back at me as I sat nervously in a leather chair holding a cup of lukewarm chamomile tea.
“I—I don't know,” I stammered, wriering my fingers together. “Dad gave me the letterhead, but he never mentioned any digital drive or cryptographic key.”
“Think, Emily,” Marcus urged gently, kneeling down beside my chair. “Did he leave you anything else? A keepsake? A watch? A book he always carried?”
I closed my eyes, searching my memory through the fog of exhaustion and fear. My father’s old wooden toolbox. The small silver locket he gave me when I turned eighteen. The worn-out leather-bound copy of Treasure Island he used to read to me every night before bed.
Treasure Island.
My eyes flew open. “The book! When we packed up his belongings after he passed, I kept his childhood copy of Treasure Island. It’s sitting right now at the bottom of my second suitcase in the nursery!”
Marcus stood up immediately. “Vance! Take a tactical team to the fourth-floor suite. Secure the red suitcase in the nursery and bring it down here immediately. Do not open it without my clearance.”
“On it, boss,” Vance’s voice crackled over the tactical comms headset.
While Vance retrieved the book, the red alarms on the main monitoring console suddenly flared from red to blinding crimson.
“Sir!” Evelyn shouted, her fingers flying across the keys in a desperate blur. “Our external perimeter sensors just tripped! Someone has breached the eastern seawall access tunnel! They’re inside the compound!”
The command center doors locked automatically with a heavy, pneumatic thud.
On the main security feed, four figures dressed in high-end tactical gear, wearing thermal-imaging helmets and carrying suppressed submachine guns, emerged from the maintenance corridor leading directly from the lake.

They weren't common street thugs or amateur hackers. They were professional corporate mercenaries.
And they were heading straight for the residential elevators.
