Chapter 2 - Whispers in the BoardroomThree weeks later, the rain was sheeting sideways against the glass windows of Vance Global Enterprises' sleek downtown Seattle headquarters, drumming a heavy, relentless beat that matched the tension inside the executive boardroom.

Julian Vance sat at the head of the polished walnut conference table, looking every bit the triumphant corporate titan. Dressed in a bespoke charcoal Brioni suit with a crisp white shirt, he gestured broadly with a Montblanc pen as he addressed the regional vice presidents and senior financial partners.
— As you can see from the Q2 projections, our expansion into the California coastal portfolio is moving ahead of schedule, — Julian was saying, his voice rich with practiced confidence. — The Malibu estate acquisition is fully secured, and our upcoming corporate gala next month will serve as the official launchpad for our new venture capital syndicate.
Around the table, sycophantic nods rippled through the room. Victoria Hayes, sitting to his immediate right in a sharp cream-colored pencil skirt with her hand resting ostentatiously over her slightly rounded abdomen, smiled like a queen surveying her court.
— And of course, — Victoria chimed in smoothly, pitching her voice just enough to command the room, — none of this would be possible without Julian’s visionary leadership. After years of carrying unnecessary personal baggage, he has finally built a future worthy of his potential.
A few murmurs of agreement circulated among the directors. Everyone in the inner circle knew the unspoken subtext: Genevieve, the barren, high-maintenance ex-wife who had supposedly held Julian back for half a decade, was safely tucked away in obscurity while the new, fertile era of the Vance dynasty took flight.
Julian beamed, soaking in the adulation. He loved the applause. He loved the illusion of absolute control.
The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the boardroom clicked open.
A sharp, collective hush fell over the room.
Julian’s head snapped toward the entrance, his smug smile faltering for a fraction of a second as I walked into the room.
I wasn't wearing the muted, understated designer clothes I used to favor during my marriage to appease his mother’s conservative tastes. Instead, I wore a structured midnight-blue Chanel pantsuit that commanded the space without a single word. My dark hair was swept up into a sleek, flawless chignon, and oversized tortoiseshell sunglasses shielded my eyes. Behind me walked Marcus Vance, carrying a heavy leather briefcase with the detached, terrifying calm of an executioner.
Julian stood up abruptly, knocking his leather chair backward against the carpet.
— Genevieve? What the hell are you doing here? This is a private corporate board meeting! Security—someone get security in here right now! — Julian shouted, his face flushing a mottled red as heads turned in shock.
Nobody moved. The security guards stationed outside the glass doors knew Marcus Vance by name; they knew the Vance family trust held the ultimate controlling interest in every building Julian stood in.
I didn't flinch. I walked slowly down the center aisle of the boardroom, my heels clicking sharply against the polished wood floor, stopping ten feet away from the head of the table.
— Good morning, Julian, — I said, my voice carrying clear, cool, and effortless across the silent room. — I hope I’m not interrupting your fairy tale. But since your upcoming wedding in Malibu is being partially funded by Vance Global Enterprises, I figured it was time for the actual owner of the enterprise to review the guest list.
Victoria stood up, her face twisting in defensive indignation. — Listen to me, you bitter, unstable—Julian told you to stay away! You’re just angry because you couldn't give him a family, and now you’re stalking his success—!
I turned my gaze slowly toward Victoria, letting my sunglasses slide down the bridge of my nose just enough to look her dead in the eyes.
— Victoria, darling, — I interrupted smoothly, a glacial sweetness coating every syllable. — You might want to check whose trust fund paid for the diamond ring on your finger. Spoiler alert: it wasn't Julian’s salary.
Julian slammed his palms onto the boardroom table, leaning forward with bared teeth. — Get out of my building, Genevieve. I signed the divorce decree eight months ago. You have no legal standing here. You are a nobody!
Marcus Vance stepped forward beside me, flipping open his heavy leather briefcase with a crisp, echoing snap.
— Actually, Mr. Vance, she has absolute legal standing, — Marcus stated, his deep, formal voice filling the room with crushing authority. He pulled out a thick stack of embossed legal documents and placed them squarely in front of Julian’s water glass. — As of this morning, federal auditors and the family trust have officially initiated a forensic asset freeze on all Vance Global accounts. Your corporate credit lines are revoked, your operating licenses are suspended under suspicion of marital asset concealment, and your Malibu wedding venue contract has just been voided for fraudulent collateral representation.
The color drained entirely from Julian’s face. He stared down at the papers as if they were venomous snakes.

— This... this is impossible, — Julian choked out, his voice cracking. — You can't do this! I am the CEO!
— You were an administrator of a revocable trust, Julian, — I replied softly, stepping closer until I could see the frantic panic pooling in his dark eyes. — And your lease has just expired.
