Chapter 5 - The Arrest in Miami

While my sister and brother-in-law were learning what it meant to be broke on the cold streets of Manhattan, my mother Eleanor was living through her own nightmare fifteen hundred miles south.
It was late evening on January 8th. According to reports from our private investigator in Miami, Eleanor and her newfound partner in crime, Ethan Vance, had spent the last week desperately trying to liquidate offshore assets and access hidden cash reserves to flee the country.
Unfortunately for them, the federal government moves faster than corrupt real estate developers.
I was sitting in the secure Brooklyn penthouse, cradling little Liam in my arms while Maya slept peacefully in the adjacent room, when my phone rang. Caller ID: Agent Miller, FBI White Collar Crime Division.
I answered immediately.
“Mr. Romano? We’ve executed the warrant,” Agent Miller’s crisp, authoritative voice came through the line. “We picked up your mother, Eleanor Romano, along with Ethan Vance and three of his associates at a private executive aviation hangar in Opa-locka, Miami. They were boarding a chartered flight to the Cayman Islands with two duffel bags containing over nine hundred thousand dollars in bearer bonds and physical cash.”
A slow, grim sense of satisfaction washed over me.
“Is she injured?” I asked.
“No, sir. Just highly indignant and screaming about her constitutional rights,” Agent Miller replied dryly. “She’s currently being booked into the federal detention center in Miami on charges of wire fraud, bank forgery, interstate transportation of stolen funds, and conspiracy. Ethan Vance is facing a mandatory minimum of fifteen years for federal racketeering and real estate fraud.”
“Will she be extradited to New York for arraignment?”
“Yes, Mr. Romano. Given that the primary jurisdiction for the forged property deeds and corporate embezzlement originates in New York, she’ll be transferred via federal transport within forty-eight hours. She’ll be held without bail given her clear flight risk.”
“Thank you, Agent Miller. Keep me updated.”
I tapped the screen to end the call and gently rested my chin against Liam’s soft, warm head. He cooed softly in his sleep, his little fists curled tight against his chest.
For fourteen months, Eleanor had ruled our family with an iron fist of emotional manipulation and financial tyranny. She had weaponized her status as a mother to justify control, intrusion, and outright theft. She had treated Maya like an interloper, a breeding vessel meant to be managed and discarded at her convenience.
And now, the woman who believed she was untouchable was sitting in a federal holding cell, stripped of her designer clothes, her jewelry, and her arrogant delusions.
A soft rustle of sheets drew my attention. I looked up to see Maya standing in the doorway of the nursery, wrapped in a plush silk robe, her complexion finally returning to a healthy, natural glow.
“Was that… was that the police?” she asked softly, her eyes reflecting a cautious, tentative hope.
I stood up, walked over, and wrapped my free arm around her shoulders, pulling her gently against my side.
“It was the FBI,” I murmured into her hair. “Mother was arrested at a private airfield in Miami trying to flee the country with a million dollars in stolen cash. She’s being held without bail, and she’s coming back to New York to face federal charges.”
Maya closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like years of accumulated poison leaving her body. A single tear slipped down her cheek, but this time, it wasn't a tear of fear. It was a tear of profound, hard-earned release.

“It’s over?” she whispered.
“It’s over,” I promised her, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Nobody will ever hurt you or our son again. I swear it.”
