Chapter 2 - The Storm Before the CalmThe silence of my newly rented loft apartment in River North was heavy, broken only by the steady hum of the refrigerator and the distant sirens wailing down Ohio Street. It was a modest space compared to the marble-columned fortress in Lincoln Park—exposed brick, tall industrial windows framing the city lights, and an oversized velvet sectional where I curled up with a cup of chamomile tea.

My phone sat on the coffee table, resting face down. It hadn't stopped buzzing for four hours.
Missed calls from Maya.
Text messages from Isabella demanding to know where I had gone.
And three missed calls from an unknown, encrypted burner line that I knew, with absolute certainty, belonged to Luke.
He hadn't found out yet from personal observation; he had found out because Maya’s senior associate had hand-delivered a duplicate copy of the divorce petition to his corporate headquarters at precisely 2:15 PM. By now, the news would be tearing through his inner circle like wildfire.
Let him rage, I thought, resting a protective hand over my flat, quiet stomach. Let him break his glass tables and scream at his security chiefs. For the first time in three years, I am breathing my own air.
Just as I reached for my laptop to review architectural blueprints for a boutique hotel lobby in downtown Milwaukee, my phone lit up again.
This time, it wasn't Luke. It flashed a name I hadn't expected to see on my screen at 9:45 PM.
Elena Morgan.
My heart skipped a beat. I swiped the answer icon and pressed the phone to my ear. “Elena? If this is about Luke—”
“Sophia, listen to me very carefully,” Elena’s voice was rushed, breathless, and laced with absolute panic. In the background, I could hear the faint, hollow clatter of hospital equipment and heavy footsteps echoing down a linoleum corridor. “You need to pack a bag right now. Don't stay at your apartment.”
My grip on the phone tightened. “What are you talking about? What happened?”
“When you came in yesterday for your routine checkup, I ran the standard comprehensive metabolic panel alongside your hormone and protein markers,” Elena said, her voice shaking. “I didn't think much of it until the lab results flagged an acute anomaly this afternoon. I ran a secondary confirmation test an hour ago.”
“Elena, slow down,” I urged, sitting up straight on the sofa, a cold sweat breaking out across my neck. “What anomaly?”
“Your blood work indicates severe, accelerated placental toxicity,” she whispered frantically. “Your body is reacting to an aggressive, rare autoimmune inflammatory trigger. If it’s what I think it is, it’s not natural, Sophia. Someone introduced a localized heavy-metal or chemical toxin into your system over the last several weeks—slowly, in doses small enough to mimic severe morning sickness, but cumulative enough to threaten both your life and the baby's.”
The room seemed to tilt sideways. The tea mug slipped from my fingers, shattering against the hardwood floor, hot liquid splashing across my bare feet.
“Toxin?” I whispered, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. “That’s impossible. I eat at home, I drink bottled water—”
“Think about who had access to your food, your drinks, your private quarters in that house,” Elena interrupted, her voice breaking. “I pulled the security access logs for the estate's private kitchen pantry through my administrative privileges before the hospital servers locked down for evening maintenance. Someone has been tampering with your daily vitamin supplements in the private master suite.”
A cold, paralyzing wave washed over me.
Isabella’s perpetual insistence that I take my prenatal vitamins every morning right in front of her.
Vanessa frequently visiting the kitchen, claiming she wanted to help prepare herbal teas for the household.
“Sophia, are you still there?!” Elena shouted through the phone. “You are not safe in Chicago. The moment Luke realizes someone in his own house tried to poison his unborn child—whether they were targeting you or the baby—every assassin, rival syndicate enforcer, and treacherous family member in this city is going to come hunting for answers. You need to get out of the state tonight.”
Before I could answer, a loud, violent crash echoed through the audio feed on Elena’s end.
“Elena? What was that?”
“Oh, God,” Elena gasped, her voice turning to a shriek of sheer terror. “They’re here. They’re in the hospital records wing—they know I accessed the lab files—”
Thud.
A muffled scuffle, the sound of glass shattering, and then a chilling, distorted voice speaking near the receiver: “Dr. Morgan, your brother sends his regards. Hand over the tablet.”
“ELENA!” I screamed into the phone.
A sharp, static screech filled the speaker, followed by dead, suffocating silence.
The line went completely dead.
I sat frozen on the sofa, the phone glued to my ear, my hands shaking so violently I could barely hold the device. The illusion of safety I had built over the last twenty-four hours evaporated in an instant. I wasn't just divorcing a dangerous man; I had walked right into the middle of a war zone where someone inside Luke’s inner circle was willing to kill my unborn child to prevent an heir—or perhaps to frame Luke for a crime so heinous it would destroy him from the inside out.
Suddenly, the heavy security buzzer at the front entrance of my apartment building downstairs blared through the intercom.
Buzzer. Buzzer. Buzzer.
Someone was leaning on the panel downstairs, refusing to stop.
I bolted off the sofa, my bare feet hitting the cold floor. I grabbed my canvas suitcase from the bedroom, threw my laptop inside, and rushed toward the private service exit at the back of the loft.
Before I could reach the door, heavy, coordinated footfalls echoed outside my main hallway.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
Three heavy strikes against my reinforced apartment door that made the wood splinter around the deadbolt.
“Sophia!” a voice roared from the hallway—a voice that sent a shiver of absolute terror straight down my spine.
It wasn't an assassin.
May you like
It was Luke.
And judging by the thunderous fury in his voice, he had just learned that his sister was missing, his house was compromised, and his runaway wife had just stumbled into the crosshairs of a conspiracy that threatened to burn his entire empire to ash.
