Chapter 6 - The Weight of the PastThe smoke had cleared, the dead men had been quietly disposed of by Luke’s cleanup crew, and the estate was locked down tighter than a military installation.

I sat in my study, staring down at my hands, feeling the phantom ache in my legs return with a vengeance. The adrenaline had worn off, leaving behind the bitter realization of how close I had come to losing the only person who had ever looked past the wheelchair and seen the man inside.
The door opened softly. Emma walked in.
She wasn't wearing her uniform. She had changed into jeans and a simple sweater. Her face was pale, and a small bandage covered a graze on her cheek where a stray piece of wood had clipped her during the breach.
She walked straight across the room, stopped in front of my wheelchair, and knelt down on the floor so our eyes were level.
“Are you hurt?” she asked, her voice shaking slightly as her fingers gently touched my wrist.
“I’m fine,” I muttered, looking away. “You shouldn't have been here tonight, Emma. This is my world. It’s violent, it’s dirty, and it destroys everything it touches. You need to take the money I gave you, pack your bags, and leave Chicago.”
Emma didn't move. Instead, she reached up, gently cupping my jaw with her hand, forcing me to look back at her.
“Do you think I don't know what kind of world this is?” she asked quietly, her eyes shining with unshed tears. “I grew up on the South Side, Danny. I’ve seen violence. I’ve seen men break. But I’ve never seen anyone fight the way you fought tonight. Not to protect an empire, but to protect me.”
My chest tightened. “I’m paralyzed, Emma. I can't walk. I can't protect anyone the way I used to.”
“You protected me with a gun, with your mind, and with a loyalty nobody in my life has ever shown me,” she whispered, leaning closer. “I didn't come here because I needed a savior. I came here because I needed a job. But I stayed because for the first time in my life, I found someone who didn't look at my exhaustion like a weakness.”

She leaned forward, pressing her lips softly against mine.
The kiss was hesitant at first, carrying the weight of all our secrets, our pain, and the walls we had both built around our hearts. But as my arms wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her flush against my chest, the phantom agony in my legs finally faded into nothingness.
