Chapter 7 - The Light After the StormSix months later.

The Bel-Air estate had undergone a complete transformation. The cold, sterile minimalism that Claire had imposed on the interior was replaced with warm woods, family photos, and the vibrant, joyful clutter of two little girls who were finally allowed to just be children.

The sun was setting over the Pacific, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

On the expansive back lawn, a massive white tent had been erected—not for a wedding, but for a celebration of a different kind. Laughter echoed across the manicured grass as Emma and Lily chased each other through a maze of fairy lights, their joyous shrieks ringing out into the evening air.

I stood on the stone patio, leaning against the railing with a glass of bourbon in my hand, watching them with a profound sense of peace I hadn't felt since before Sarah passed away.

Daniel walked up beside me, resting a hand on the stone ledge.

"Federal prosecutor just called, boss," Daniel said quietly. "Claire took a plea deal. Twenty-five years, no parole, maximum security federal penitentiary in Indiana. Victor Vance’s empire is completely dismantled. His assets were absorbed by our legitimate holdings this morning."

I took a slow sip of the bourbon, letting the warmth spread through my chest. "Good. Let her spend the next quarter-century staring at gray concrete walls, thinking about what she lost."

"You handled it like a ghost, Alex," Daniel nodded with quiet respect. "Most men in your position would have let anger cloud their judgment."

"Anger is a tool, Daniel," I replied, looking out across the lawn where Maria was handing both of my daughters plates of homemade cupcakes. "You use it when you need to strike. But protection? Protection requires a cool head and a steady hand."

Footsteps approached softly from behind.

I turned around.

Emma and Lily came running across the patio, their faces smeared with chocolate frosting, laughing hysterically. They crashed straight into my legs, wrapping their arms around my waist with fierce, unbreakable affection.

"Daddy! Maria says we can stay up till nine o'clock because it's Saturday!" Lily announced triumphantly, looking up at me with her mother’s wide, luminous eyes.

I scooped Lily up into my arms and hoisted Emma onto my shoulders, feeling their laughter vibrate straight through my soul.

"Is that right?" I grinned, looking down at Maria, who stood on the patio steps with her hands on her hips, shaking her head with an affectionate smile. "Well, if Maria says it’s okay, then I suppose the rules have to bend."

The girls cheered, their little hands tangling in my hair as we walked out together into the golden twilight.

The monsters of the underworld could keep their empires, their syndicates, and their fear. I had my girls, I had my home, and for the first time in a very long time, the shadows had been completely driven out by the light.
