Chapter 5 - The Gala of FoolsBy 7:30 PM, the grand ballroom of the Bel-Air estate was glittering with crystal chandeliers, champagne fountains, and fifty of Los Angeles’s most prominent socialites, politicians, and business leaders.

It was supposed to be a pre-wedding celebration hosted by Claire to showcase our upcoming marriage to high society.
Instead, it was a execution chamber.
I stood near the mahogany bar in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch that I hadn't touched. Across the room, Claire was the picture of radiant elegance in a backless scarlet gown, laughing brightly as she accepted congratulations from the city’s district attorney and two prominent real estate developers.
She looked radiant, confident, and completely untouchable.
"You're playing with fire having Vance's associates in this room, boss," Daniel whispered, materializing beside me in a sharp tuxedo that made him look more like a Wall Street banker than a syndicate enforcer. He subtly nodded toward the far corner of the ballroom, where two men in expensive suits—known associates of Victor Vance—stood near the double doors, watching Claire with hawk-like intensity.
"They’re not my guests, Daniel," I murmured, taking a slow sip of my scotch. "They’re witnesses. I invited them so they could see firsthand what happens when you try to sink your teeth into a Castalano."
At that moment, Claire floated across the polished hardwood floor toward me, her eyes sparkling with triumphant malice disguised as adoration. She rested a manicured hand against my lapel, smiling up at me in front of half the room.
"Darling," Claire purred, pouting slightly. "You're back early from Toronto. Why didn't you let me know? I would have sent the driver to LAX."
The entire room seemed to quiet down, several guests turning their heads to watch the happy couple.
I looked down at her—really looked at her—not as the woman I thought I loved, but as the parasite she truly was.
"Traffic was light, Claire," I said, my voice dangerously smooth. "And I realized I couldn't bear being away from my home for four whole days. Especially when there are so many... unresolved matters happening under my roof."
Claire’s smile flickered for a microsecond, a tiny flash of panic crossing her eyes before she plastered the porcelain mask back onto her face. "Whatever do you mean, Alex?"
"I mean," I said, raising my voice just enough to carry across the hushed silence of the ballroom, "that a man’s home is his castle. And sometimes, you find out that the people guarding the gates are actually letting the wolves inside."
The district attorney standing nearby frowned, swirling his champagne glass. "Is everything alright, Alex? Sounds like business troubles."
"Not business troubles, Marcus," I replied, maintaining unbroken eye contact with Claire, whose face had gone completely pale. "Family troubles. Or rather... treason."
Before Claire could speak, the double doors of the ballroom swung wide open.
The string quartet stopped playing mid-note.
Four federal agents in tactical windbreakers, accompanied by Daniel and six of my private security detail, marched into the ballroom with absolute, terrifying authority. At their head was Special Agent Ramirez of the FBI’s organized crime division.
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Champagne flutes lowered. Several socialites stepped backward as if a bomb had just been rolled onto the floor.
"Claire Vance—or should I say, Claire Sterling?" Agent Ramirez announced, his voice booming across the grand hall as he pulled an arrest warrant from his breast pocket. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate espionage, wire fraud, money laundering on behalf of a designated criminal enterprise, and child endangerment."
The room erupted into absolute pandemonium.
Screams, gasps, and frantic whispers bounced off the crystal chandeliers.
Claire spun around, her face twisted in absolute horror, her eyes darting frantically toward the two Vance associates by the door. But my security detail had already pinned both men against the marble pillars, their hands zip-tied behind their backs before they could reach their jackets.
"Alex!" Claire shrieked, lunging forward and grabbing my sleeve with desperate, clawing fingers. "You can't let them do this! It's a mistake! Someone set me up! It was the maid—it was Maria! She planted those things!"
I looked down at her hand on my sleeve, then slowly, deliberately, peeled her fingers away one by one, tossing her hand aside as if she were nothing more than dirt off my shoe.
"Maria doesn't have offshore accounts in the Caymans, Claire," I said softly, my voice cold enough to freeze liquid nitrogen. "And Maria certainly doesn't write down extortion schedules in a black leather notebook locked in the master vanity."
Claire stumbled backward, her knees buckling as the federal agents moved in, sliding steel handcuffs over her delicate wrists with a harsh, metallic click.
May you like
"You knew," she whispered, her voice cracking with sheer, unadulterated venom as tears streamed down her mascara-stained face. "You knew the whole time!"
"From the moment you raised your voice to my daughters," I replied, turning my back on her as the agents hauled her toward the double doors.
