Chapter 3 - Upstairs and Underground

The heavy oak front door of the mansion shuddered once, twice, before the reinforced deadbolt splintered under the coordinated kick of the federal tactical team. Agents flooded the foyer, their boots pounding against the imported Italian marble. Victoria let out a piercing shriek, covering her ears as she was guided firmly away from the threshold by a female state trooper. Richard tried to invoke his political connections, waving a hand in Marcus Hayes's face, but Marcus simply flashed a pair of steel handcuffs and gestured toward a waiting state cruiser.
"Mr. and Mrs. Carter, you are being detained for questioning regarding obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and harboring an unlawful hostage," Marcus announced smoothly, his tone leaving zero room for negotiation.
I didn't wait for them to finish arguing. I brushed past the struggling trio and sprinted up the grand curved staircase, taking two steps at a time despite the dull ache in my knees.
"Emma!" I called out, my voice echoing down the silent, dimly lit upper hallway.
A muffled thud came from behind the heavy double doors at the far end of the corridor—the master bedroom.
I reached the door, grabbed the brass handle, and found it locked from the outside with a digital keypad deadbolt. Without hesitation, I stepped back and slammed my shoulder against the hardwood paneling right beside the lock mechanism. The internal wiring sparked, the heavy bolt sheared off its track, and the door swung wide open.
The scene inside made my blood run instantly cold.
The spacious bedroom was in complete disarray. Designer vanity drawers had been pulled out and dumped across the carpet. A heavy oak chair lay on its side near the king-sized bed. And huddled in the far corner, shivering violently, was my daughter.
Emma’s blonde hair was tangled and damp with sweat. Her favorite silver blouse was torn at the shoulder, and a dark, ugly bruise was already forming along her left jawline. Her wrists were bound behind her back with heavy plastic zip ties that had cut deeply into her skin, leaving raw, bleeding gasps.
"Dad..." she whispered, her voice cracking as fresh tears spilled over her lashes. "You... you came."
"I'm right here, sweetheart. I've got you," I choked out, dropping to my knees beside her.
I pulled a small tactical pocketknife from my belt, carefully slicing through the zip ties without nicking her skin. The moment her hands were free, Emma threw her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder and sobbing with the full, agonizing weight of a terror she had been carrying alone for months.
"He said... he said if I ever told anyone about the company accounts or the money he was stealing from your retirement fund, he'd make sure I never saw you again," Emma wept, her small frame shaking uncontrollably. "He took my phone, Dad. When I managed to grab the spare landline in the hallway to call you, he caught me... and then he smashed it."
I held her tightly, stroking her hair while my own eyes burned with a cold, unforgiving fire. Ethan hadn't just been abusing her emotionally; he had systematically embezzled funds from the family trust I had set up for her future, using her as a legal shield while he funded his secret mistress and high-risk speculative investments.

A federal agent appeared in the doorway, nodding respectfully. "Mr. Carter, the downstairs is secure. Ethan Carter is in handcuffs in the back of the cruiser. Director Hayes is asking for your direction on how to handle the secondary safe discovered in the basement study."
I gently helped Emma to her feet, wrapping my jacket around her shoulders. "Help my daughter down to the medical unit waiting outside," I instructed the agent. Then, looking down the dark hallway toward the basement stairs, I added, "And tell Marcus to bring a portable evidence scanner. We're about to find out why Ethan was so desperate to keep everyone locked out of this house tonight."
