Chapter 1 - The Shattered ShadowThe silence in the library after the line went dead was louder than a gunshot. The faint vinyl crackle of the old blues record felt like sharp glass scraping against my nerve endings.

My mother’s voice—weak, terrified, echoing through the phone speaker—replayed on a loop inside my mind. Claire, sweetheart... don't trust anyone in that house.
My hands began to shake violently. The suitcase standing by the heavy oak doors suddenly felt like an anchor dragging me into an abyss. I looked at Adrian.
The vulnerability I had seen in his grey eyes just seconds ago vanished, replaced in a split second by a blinding, terrifying fury. The billionaire who had softly asked if I could love a man in a wheelchair was gone; in his place sat the undisputed monarch of Chicago’s underworld. His jaw was set like forged iron, his broad shoulders squared, his calloused hands gripping the armrests of his leather wheelchair so tightly the knuckles turned stark white.
"Adrian..." I choked out, the air refusing to fill my lungs. "My mother... Victor has my mother..."
"He doesn't have her yet," Adrian said. His voice was no longer a whisper; it was a low, subsonic rumble that sent a chill straight down my spine. "Because Victor Vale is a coward who relies on theatrical phone calls to hide the fact that he's cornered."
Adrian didn't hesitate. He pressed a silver button hidden beneath the edge of his mahogany desk. Within four seconds, the double doors of the library burst open.
Marcus Vance—Adrian’s head of security, a six-foot-four wall of muscle with a cold, scarred face—stepped into the room, his hand already resting on the grip of his concealed firearm. Behind him stood two tactical guards in dark charcoal suits.
"Boss," Marcus said, his voice flat and steady.
"Track the signal from the call five seconds ago," Adrian commanded, his tone sharp and surgical. "Lock down Saint Jude’s Hospital. Find out who authorized my mother-in-law’s transfer from the ICU, and pull the perimeter guards stationed outside her floor."
Marcus’s eyes flicked to me for a fraction of a second before returning to Adrian. "The hospital detail hasn't checked in for twenty minutes, Don Vale. We thought it was a routine relay switch."
"It wasn't a relay switch. It was a breach," Adrian spat out, sliding his heavy silver wedding ring back onto his finger with a decisive snap. He turned his piercing gaze toward me. "Claire. Look at me."
I took a trembling step toward his desk, wiping a tear from my cheek. "Adrian, please. I’ll do whatever Victor wants. If he wants the five million, if he wants the contract broken—"
"Victor doesn't want money, Claire," Adrian interrupted, grabbing my hand and pulling me close until I was kneeling beside his chair, my face inches from his. His thumb brushed gently against my cheek, his touch warm and fiercely possessive despite the storm raging around us. "Victor wants my empire. And he thinks that by taking your mother, he can force me to sign over my grandfather’s proxy votes before the council meets tomorrow morning."
His grey eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that burned away my panic, replacing it with an unshakeable, terrifying warmth.
"He targeted the one thing in this world I cannot afford to lose," Adrian whispered, his voice dripping with absolute, iron-clad promise. "I am going to bring your mother back, Claire. And then I am going to tear Victor’s world down to the dust."
Marcus stepped forward, holding an encrypted military-grade tablet. "Signal located, Boss. It wasn't routed through Chicago. It bounced off a private server at the North Ridge Industrial Docks. Pier 42."

Adrian’s lips curved into a cold, lethal smile that made my heart leap in my chest.
"Pier 42," Adrian murmured softly. "My cousin always had terrible taste in hiding spots. Marcus, prepare the convoy. We're going to pick up my mother-in-law."
