Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a TrapThe music in the ballroom seemed to distort, stretching into a low, metallic hum as Dominic Bellardi guided me across the polished marble floor. Every head turned. People pressed their backs against the floral arrangements to give us a wide berth, whispering behind cupped hands as the shadow of the city's most feared billionaire swept past them.

Nathan looked like a man standing on the edge of a firing squad. His jaw twitched uncontrollably, and Emily—oblivious to the seismic shift in the room—was still giggling at something he had said, her hand resting on his tuxedo jacket until she finally noticed where his wide, terror-stricken eyes were fixed.
When Emily turned and saw Dominic walking toward us with me on his arm, the color drained from her face as well. The glass of champagne in her hand trembled, spilling a few golden drops onto her expensive silk shoes.
"Dominic," I whispered frantically, my voice catching in my throat as we closed the distance. "What did you mean? What do you have to do with Nathan?"
"Everything, and nothing," Dominic replied smoothly, his stride unhurried, commanding the space around us with effortless dominance. "Men like Nathan Wexler believe that because they wear custom suits and sit on charity boards, the rules of the jungle no longer apply to them. They borrow against shadows, thinking the bill will never arrive."
"You know him?"
"I know all my investments, Ms. Morris. And right now, your fiancé is a very poor investment."
We stopped four feet away from the marble arch. Nathan looked as though he might physically collapse. He swallowed hard, his throat bobbing, before he managed to force a thin, trembling veneer of polite corporate composure onto his features.
"D-Mr. Bellardi," Nathan stammered, his voice cracking slightly on the first syllable before he caught himself. "I... I didn't realize you were attending tonight's gala. What an unexpected... honor."
Dominic didn't look at Nathan immediately. Instead, his gaze drifted slowly to Emily, whose smile had long since dissolved into pure panic. Then, his dark eyes settled back on my cheating fiancé with chilling indifference.
"An honor, Nathan? You look as though you've just seen a ghost," Dominic said, his baritone voice carrying easily across the hushed perimeter of guests who had stopped dancing to watch. "Or perhaps you simply recognize the man whose signature you forged last Tuesday at the municipal tax office."
The blood rushed violently to my ears. Forged?
Nathan’s face turned the color of ash. "I—I don't know what you're talking about, sir. There must be some mistake—"
"There are no mistakes in my world, Nathan," Dominic interrupted softly, stepping slightly in front of me as if shielding me from a foul odor. "Only liabilities. And right now, you are standing in my light."
Emily finally found her voice, her eyes wide with indignation, trying to salvage whatever pride she had left. "Excuse me! Who do you think you are talking to him like that? We are guests of—"
"Emily, shut up!" Nathan hissed, his voice breaking into a panicked shriek as he grabbed my sister’s arm so hard she winced. He looked at Dominic with eyes begging for mercy. "Please, Mr. Bellardi... not here. Not tonight. Not in front of her."
"In front of Claire?" Dominic raised an eyebrow, his tone laced with a dangerous edge. "Why? Because she was supposed to be the blind, dutiful little wife who smiled for the cameras while you systematically looted her father’s architectural firm and used her personal inheritance to cover your gambling debts with my casinos?"
The ballroom erupted into silent shock.
Every single word landed on me like a physical blow. My father’s firm—Sterling & Associates—had suffered a mysterious liquidity crisis six months ago. Nathan had convinced me to sign over my voting shares to "stabilize corporate cash flow." He had held my hand, kissed my forehead, and told me he was protecting our future.

It was all a lie. He had been stealing from me to pay off organized gambling debts to the very man standing beside me.
I looked up at Dominic, the betrayal of my fiancé completely overshadowed by the dizzying realization of how deeply I had been played. And as Nathan took a desperate step forward, begging for a private word, Dominic raised his hand—and the entire night shifted from a personal tragedy into a full-scale corporate war.
