Chapter 7 - A New Dynasty

Six months later, the autumn wind whipped through the cobblestone streets of downtown Chicago, carrying the crisp scent of fallen leaves and roasting chestnuts.

Harper stood on the balcony of a newly renovated art gallery in the River North district, adjusting the lapel of her tailored emerald blazer. The plaque beside the grand oak entrance read: THE HAWTHORNE GALLERY – PROPRIETOR: HARPER HAWTHORNE.

For years, Caleb had systematically talked her out of opening her own art gallery, claiming it was too risky, too expensive, and a distraction from her duties as his future wife. Now, with the silent, powerful backing of Dominic’s legal and financial network, her dream had become a towering reality. The gallery was packed to capacity with Chicago’s elite collectors, critics, and socialites, all vying for a glimpse of the inaugural exhibition.

Inside the gallery, the hum of polite conversation and classical cello music filled the air.

Harper took a deep breath, letting the cool autumn air fill her lungs, feeling a profound sense of peace and invincibility that she had never known before.

A familiar warmth enveloped her from behind as two strong arms wrapped gently around her waist, pulling her back against a solid, comforting chest. A chin rested softly on her shoulder.

“You’re hiding,” Dominic whispered against her ear, his deep voice sending a familiar, pleasant shiver down her spine.

“I’m not hiding,” Harper protested with a smile, leaning back into his embrace. “I’m taking five minutes of quiet before Senator Hayes tries to buy my entire front-wall collection again.”

Dominic chuckled, a rich, resonant sound that made her heart skip a beat. He turned her gently in his arms, his grey eyes shining with unabashed pride as he looked down at her. “Let him try. My financial advisors set the reserve prices specifically to bankrupt him if he gets ambitious.”

Harper laughed, reaching up to adjust the collar of his shirt. “You are ruthless, Mr. Moretti.”

“Only when it comes to protecting what’s mine,” Dominic replied, his voice dropping into a low, intense murmur that made the surrounding crowd fade into complete insignificance.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

Harper’s breath hitched. She froze, looking up at him with wide, astonished eyes.

Dominic didn't drop to one knee—that wasn't his style, and they both knew it. Instead, he held her gaze with absolute, unyielding devotion as he popped open the lid. Inside rested a ring unlike any traditional diamond solitaire: a magnificent, deep-green emerald surrounded by a halo of brilliant vintage diamonds, catching the gallery lights like a spark of captured magic.

“When you walked into my office six months ago, you were running from a ghost,” Dominic said softly, his voice steady and clear above the distant music. “You thought your heart was broken beyond repair. But every single day since then, you’ve proven that you weren't broken at all—you were simply waiting to ignite.”

Tears welled in Harper’s eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of grief or betrayal. They were tears of profound, overwhelming joy.

“Dominic…” she whispered.

“I don't offer promises lightly, Harper,” he continued, sliding the stunning emerald ring onto her finger. It fit with absolute, flawless perfection. “And I don't ask for permission to stand by your side against whatever the world throws our way. But I am asking if you will build this empire—and this life—with me.”

Harper didn't hesitate for a single second. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder, her voice thick with emotion.

“Yes,” she whispered fiercely. “Yes, Dominic. A million times yes.”

As Dominic pulled her close and pressed a deep, tender kiss to her lips, the flashing cameras of society reporters caught the moment through the glass window, broadcasting the birth of a new power couple across the city.

Far away, inside a maximum-security federal penitentiary, Caleb Vance sat in a cold, sterile cell, staring blankly at a small television screen as a news segment flashed across the local broadcast, showing his brilliant, independent ex-fiancée standing proudly beside the most powerful man in Chicago.

Caleb realized too late what he had lost. But for Harper, the past was nothing more than ashes in the wind. The wrong door had led her straight into the dark, terrifying heart of a syndicate boss—and in doing so, it had given her everything she was ever meant to be.
