Chapter 4 - Landing in the Eternal CityThe descent into Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport was greeted by a brilliant Mediterranean sunrise that painted the Roman horizon in strokes of gold, amber, and soft rose.

Inside the private first-class cabin, the atmosphere was a complete reversal of the chaos from the night before. Little Leo was awake, babbling happily as he chewed on the corner of his plush toy while Julian sat beside him, looking more relaxed than a stressed billionaire had any right to be.

Maya, my three-year-old, had spent the last hour pressing her face against the window of seat one-B, marveling at the puffy white clouds below us, completely enchanted by the luxury breakfast tray the flight attendants had lavished upon her.

As the 777 touched down with a smooth, echoing thud against the tarmac, the seatbelt sign chimed off.

"Stay seated, everyone," Marcus announced from the aisle, positioning himself near the main exit door. "Vance logistics protocol is in effect."

I turned to Julian, feeling a sudden, nervous flutter in my stomach. "Mr. Vance, thank you for... well, for everything. You didn't have to upgrade us or give me that card."

"I gave you a fraction of what you gave me, Claire," Julian replied quietly, closing his laptop and standing up to retrieve our carry-on bags. "You brought my son back to me when I was completely out of options. In my world, debts like that are never ignored."

"I’m just a nurse, Julian. I saw a baby who needed help."

"You’re a survivor," he corrected, his gray eyes holding mine with intense gravity. "And survivors deserve allies."

The first-class door hissed open, but instead of the crowded jet bridge leading to the main terminal, a private airport operations coordinator stood waiting at the threshold, bowing respectfully toward Julian.

"Mr. Vance, the tarmac transfer is ready. Your private convoy is parked directly below the stairs."

"Lead the way," Julian said.

As we descended the mobile metal staircase down onto the sun-drenched Roman tarmac, a sleek black Mercedes Maybach idling beside two black SUVs waited with its doors open. A tall, impeccably dressed Italian man in a sharp charcoal suit stood by the rear door, holding a digital tablet.

"Claire," Julian said, pausing by the car door before I could head toward the terminal shuttle with my single battered suitcase. "Where is your cousin meeting you?"

I hesitated, feeling a sudden flush of embarrassment. "Trastevere. She... she lives in a fourth-floor walk-up apartment near the piazza."

Julian didn't bat an eye. He looked at Marcus, then back to me. "Marcus, coordinate with our Roman estate manager. Have the Trastevere apartment inspected, renovated, and fully stocked by noon. Upgrade the security, install a private nursery, and ensure Mrs. Miller and her daughter have a reliable, luxury vehicle at their disposal indefinitely."

"Wait, Mr. Vance—Julian, no!" I protested, stepping back. "You can't just take over my cousin's apartment! That's insane!"

"It’s not insane, it’s pragmatic," Julian argued smoothly, opening the Maybach door for Maya, who hopped inside giggling. "You fled an abusive situation with €274 and a dream, Claire. Let a man with billions of dollars and a monumental debt of gratitude make sure you don't starve while you figure out your next move."

Before I could formulate a counter-argument, Julian leaned in close, his clean scent of cedarwood and expensive espresso wrapping around me.

"Take the car, Claire. Use the card. Protect your daughter," he whispered fiercely. "I’ll be in touch before the week is out. Leo needs his favorite nurse."

Before I could answer, he closed the heavy armored door, sealing us inside the air-conditioned luxury of the Maybach.

As the car pulled away from the tarmac and headed out toward the ancient streets of Rome, I looked down at the matte-black platinum card resting in my hand.

Richard thought he had destroyed me. He thought hiding my money, breaking my spirit, and bruising my daughter's knee would keep us trapped in his miserable orbit forever.

He had no idea that a screaming baby on a flight to Rome had just handed me the keys to an entirely new kingdom.
