Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

It took three weeks for the city’s underworld to stabilize after the fall of the Vance syndicate.
During that time, my quiet, predictable life at the fourth-street pharmacy underwent a permanent, irreversible transformation. While I still kept my shifts—refusing to let go of the independent routine I had built for myself—the black SUV parked quietly down the block, and the armed, respectful men who occasionally dropped by to ensure my safety, made it abundantly clear to everyone in the neighborhood that I was no longer just an ordinary pharmacy clerk.
Gemma recovered quickly, her reckless bravado returning within days, though she now called me three times a day to check in and had officially named her cat Macaroni Hart-Russo in honor of our shared ordeal.
My parents made a sudden, frantic appearance at my tiny apartment two weeks after the rescue, whispering warnings about dangerous men and syndicate families, but I had calmly closed the door in their faces. For the first time in my life, I didn't care about their opinions or their fears. I had found my own ground.
And Dominic... Dominic was everywhere and nowhere all at once.
He didn't crowd me, but he was always there—a steady, unyielding presence in my life. We shared quiet dinners in his penthouse overlooking the lake, walked along the windy piers in the crisp autumn air, and talked about things I had never shared with anyone else. The walls I had spent a decade building around my heart didn't crash down all at once; they simply melted away in the warmth of his unwavering attention.
One Friday evening, after closing the pharmacy early, I walked out into the cool evening air to find Dominic leaning against the side of his black SUV. He wasn't wearing his usual tailored business suit; he wore a dark wool sweater and an open collar, looking less like the feared syndicate leader of Chicago and more like a man who simply wanted to take me away from the noise of the world.
“Ready?” he asked as I approached, his dark eyes lighting up with that familiar, quiet warmth.

“Where are we going?” I asked, smiling as I slid my hand into his outstretched palm.
“Somewhere quiet,” he said, opening the passenger door for me. “Far away from ledgers, shipping terminals, and family drama.”
