Chapter 3 - The Empire of ShadowsThe penthouse office on the forty-fifth floor of the Moretti Tower offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the entire city skyline, glittering like a sea of diamonds beneath the midnight stars.

Yet, inside the sprawling, soundproofed room, nobody was looking at the view.

Seated around a massive walnut conference table were my five brothers, their expressions a mix of grim satisfaction and lingering protective fury. On the mahogany desk in front of me lay the complete forensic breakdown of the Cole family empire—every shell company, every hidden offshore account, every illicit real estate kickback, and every dirty political bribe they had accumulated over the past two decades.

Gabriel tapped the corner of the tablet, projecting a massive organizational chart onto the smart glass wall behind us.

— It’s even worse than we initially thought, — Gabriel reported, his voice crisp and professional. — Adrian and his father didn't just run a successful construction firm; they built a massive Ponzi scheme, funneling municipal development funds into private accounts and using shell companies to bribe zoning commissioners. They’re facing a minimum of thirty federal indictments by morning.

Luca leaned back in his leather chair, spinning a silver fountain pen between his fingers with practiced ease.

— The criminal trials are guaranteed locks, — Luca added, a smug smile playing on his lips. — With the evidence Gabriel pulled from their main servers and the testimonies of three disgruntled former CFOs who reached out to my office an hour ago, the Cole family won't just lose their money—they’ll be spending the next several decades wearing orange jumpsuits in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, wrapping Dominic’s heavy cashmere coat tighter around my shoulders, watching the distant blinking lights of airplanes descending toward the international airport.

For three years, I had allowed myself to shrink. I had allowed Adrian to convince me that my voice didn't matter, that my presence was a burden, and that my family’s formidable influence was something to be hidden away in shame. I had let him treat me like a servant in my own home, all because I wanted to believe in the illusion of a normal marriage.

A gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned to see Dominic looking down at me with an expression of profound warmth and unspoken apology.

— You should have told us on day one, Elena, — Dominic said softly. — You never had to endure a single second of that bastard's abuse. You carry the Moretti name. You were never a victim; you just chose to be patient.

— I needed to see how far his arrogance would take him, — I replied quietly, a cold, resolute calm settling deep within my chest. — I wanted him to build his entire world on sand, so that when I finally pulled the foundation out, there wouldn't be a single piece left standing.

Before Dominic could respond, the heavy oak doors of the office swung open.

My private secretary, a sharp young woman named Clara, stepped inside, holding a glowing tablet and a sealed, heavy parchment envelope embossed with a wax royal seal.

— Ms. Moretti, — Clara said respectfully, nodding toward me. — You have an urgent visitor downstairs in the private lobby. Refusing to leave until they speak with you.

I raised an eyebrow. — At two in the morning? Who could possibly be looking for me at this hour?

Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, glancing down at the envelope in her hands.

— Margaret Cole. And she brought company.

A heavy silence descended over the conference room. My brothers exchanged sharp, knowing glances. Matteo let out a short, harsh bark of laughter, shaking his head in sheer disbelief.

— The audacity of that woman is genuinely impressive, — Matteo muttered, crossing his muscular arms over his chest. — Her family empire is completely dismantled, her son is sitting in a holding cell facing decades behind bars, and she has the gall to come begging to us in the middle of the night?

— Let her up, — I said calmly, turning back toward the conference table and taking my seat at the head of the walnut desk. — I want to see what she has to say for herself now that the tables have turned.

Ten minutes later, the private elevator chimed softly.

Margaret Cole walked into the penthouse suite, but the haughty, jewel-draped matriarch who had laughed at my humiliation just hours earlier was entirely gone. Her hair was disheveled, her expensive silk blouse was rumpled and stained with coffee, and her eyes were red-rimmed and hollowed out by absolute panic. Behind her stood Richard, shuffling like an old, defeated man, leaning heavily on a cane he didn't use to need.

Margaret took three trembling steps into the room, looked around at my five towering brothers standing like stone statues of judgment, and then her knees buckled.

May you like

To the absolute shock of everyone in the room, Margaret Cole dropped straight to the polished marble floor, pressing her palms flat against the cold surface in a desperate, humiliating gesture of absolute submission.

— Elena... — Margaret choked out, her voice cracking into a pathetic, desperate sob. — Please. I’m begging you. Have mercy on us.
