Chapter 5 - Rebuilding the FoundationWith the legal battles finally behind us, the real work of healing began.

The restructuring of Thorn & Vance Design into a foundation wasn't just a change of name; it was a complete ideological rebirth. We moved the primary headquarters out of the sterile, glass-and-steel downtown skyscraper that Bradley had loved so much, relocating to a sunlit, historic adobe building near downtown Phoenix with exposed brick walls, terracotta floors, and high ceilings that let in the desert light.
Chloe, Katherine’s former junior assistant, stepped up as the lead creative director. On our first official day open in the new space, Chloe walked into my office carrying a stack of initial design concepts for our upcoming community scholarship program.
"What do you think, Mrs. Florence?" Chloe asked, laying the sketches across my desk.
I looked down at the paper. At the center of the logo was a bold, elegant line drawing of a sunflower, its petals stretching upward toward an open sky, framed by the words: Strength in the Light.
"It’s perfect, Chloe," I whispered, my eyes stinging with happy tears. "Katherine would have loved it."
"She designed the original concept sketch two years ago," Chloe confessed softly, smiling as she traced the edge of the paper. "She kept it hidden in the back of her sketchbook because she said Bradley thought sunflowers were too rustic for our corporate brand. I’m glad we finally get to use it."
That evening, after locking up the studio, I drove back to the Scottsdale house.
The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, painting the desert sky in breathtaking shades of amber, violet, and deep rose. The temperature dropped just enough to bring a refreshing evening breeze through the open windows.
Tanya was already fast asleep upstairs, tucked safely beneath her pink blanket, clutching a stuffed teddy bear.
I stepped out onto the back patio with a cup of chamomile tea, looking out over the garden.
The sunflower stalks we had planted weeks ago had already shot up nearly two feet, their thick green stems standing proud and tall against the evening wind, their golden faces turned expectantly toward the eastern horizon, ready to greet the morning light.
I took a slow sip of my tea, feeling a deep, abiding peace settle into my bones for the first time in over a year.
Bradley was behind bars where he belonged. Heather was facing the stark reality of her choices in a federal holding facility. The house, the business, and most importantly, my granddaughter’s future were secure, protected by the unyielding legacy of a mother who refused to be silenced.
Katherine had won.
Not with money, not with cruelty, and not with deceit.
She had won with truth, courage, and a love so fierce it had punched straight through the grave to bring justice home.

I raised my mug in a quiet, silent toast to the darkening sky, watching the first stars begin to flicker above the desert hills.
"We did it, sweetheart," I whispered into the warm night air. "You're safe now."
