Chapter 3 - The Mistress’s True ColorsBy 7:00 p.m., the rain had turned into a torrential downpour, lashing against the tinted windows of my luxury downtown penthouse. The sprawling, minimalist apartment that had once felt like a monument to my success now felt like a mausoleum.

I stood in the center of the living room, staring blindly at the wet city lights below, when the private elevator chimed.

The door slid open, and Vanessa stepped inside, kicking off her Louboutin heels with an angry, sharp clatter against the hardwood floor. Her face was flushed, her designer handbag clutched tightly in her white-knuckled grip.

“What the hell is going on, Dominic?!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. “My phone has been ringing off the hook! My credit cards—the ones linked to your corporate account—were just declined at Saks Fifth Avenue! And my assistant told me that your firm is facing a federal embezzlement investigation!”

I didn't turn around. I kept my eyes fixed on the rain-streaked glass. “It’s true, Vanessa. We’re ruined.”

A sharp, hysterical laugh burst from her throat. “Ruined?! What do you mean we are ruined? I am not ruined! I didn't spend the last two years playing mistress to a bankrupt corporate criminal!”

She marched across the room, grabbing my arm and spinning me around to face her. The adoration and playful flirtation that had defined our relationship were completely gone, replaced by a vicious, feral panic.

“Fix it,” she demanded, poking a manicured finger into my chest. “Transfer my monthly allowance. Pay off my boutique accounts. You promised me that penthouse in Miami! You said you were untouchable!”

“I was wrong,” I said quietly, gently shaking her hand off my arm. “Callie filed for divorce. She froze the company accounts, submitted the audit trail to the SEC, and initiated asset seizure across all our holdings. I don't have access to capital, Vanessa. My cards are canceled, my accounts are locked, and the board fired me three hours ago.”

Vanessa stared at me as if I were speaking an alien language. Her eyes darted wildly around the lavish penthouse—the Italian leather furniture, the imported wool rugs, the floor-to-ceiling art collection—as if calculating their resale value in real-time.

“You’re broke?” she whispered, horror dawning in her expression.

“Effectively, yes.”

“You lying, pathetic coward,” she hissed, venom dripping from every syllable. “You used me as an accessory to your corporate fraud while hiding behind your rich wife’s coattails! I want nothing to do with you. I want my name scrubbed from every reservation, every lease, and every record associated with your miserable life.”

She snatched her handbag off the floor, grabbed her shoes, and bolted toward the private elevator without a backward glance.

“Vanessa—!” I called out instinctively.

“Don't you ever fucking call me again!” she screamed back, slamming the elevator button violently.

The doors slid shut, sealing her departure with a soft, clinical ping.

I stood alone in the vast, silent penthouse. In less than twelve hours, my career, my fortune, my prestige, and my mistress had all vanished into thin air. I had sacrificed my honor, my marriage, and my family for a woman who abandoned me the exact second the money ran out.

Slowly, I sank down onto the edge of the Italian leather sofa, burying my face in my hands as the crushing, suffocating weight of my own sins finally dragged me down into the dark.
