Chapter 6 - The Cleansing FireBy Friday evening, the storm had passed, leaving behind a pristine, scorched-earth landscape where only the absolute truth remained standing.

The board of directors had unanimously reaffirmed my position as CEO and sole controlling shareholder of Moretti Holdings, voting through emergency resolutions that stripped Dante of every title, trust fund, and share he possessed. His co-conspirators within the executive ranks had already resigned before security could escort them from the building.

I rode the private elevator up to the penthouse alone, feeling a lightness in my chest that I hadn't experienced in over a thousand days.

When the doors slid open, the penthouse felt different. It wasn't a prison anymore. It was just a home.

I walked into the kitchen, picked up the porcelain teacup of placebo herbal tea Dr. Vance had prepared, and walked out onto the expansive glass-paneled terrace. The autumn wind of Manhattan whipped through my hair, carrying the sharp, clean scent of rain.

I took a sip of the tea. It tasted warm, soothing, and completely harmless.

A soft patter of footsteps sounded behind me on the terrace tiles.

I turned around. Lily stood there in her yellow pajamas, holding her battered gray rabbit under one arm, blinking sleepily against the evening breeze.

“Mr. Moretti?” she whispered.

I smiled—a genuine, warm smile that had been buried beneath years of suspicion and survival. I crouched down to her eye level.

“Hello, Lily. You’re up late again.”

“Mama’s downstairs,” she said, tilting her head. “Are you still cranky?”

“No, Lily,” I answered softly, reaching out to gently straighten the tangled curls on her head. “In fact, for the first time in three years... I think I’m finally awake.”

She looked at my teacup. “Is that the right story?”

I chuckled, standing back up and holding her small, warm hand. “Better than a story, Lily. It’s a completely clean slate.”

I walked her back down to the staff quarters, ensuring Mrs. Ricci was resting comfortably, before returning to my suite.

That night, I didn't lock my bedroom door out of fear. I didn't check the perimeter sensors every twenty minutes. I simply lay down on my king-sized bed, pulled the covers over my shoulders, and closed my eyes.

There were no shadows in the hallway. There were no poisoned cups waiting on the nightstand. There was only the quiet, beautiful rhythm of my own breathing, pulling me down into a deep, unbroken, and dreamless sleep.
