Chapter 6 - The Gala, the Interruption, and the Ultimate BetrayalSaturday night arrived with the glittering spectacle of a royal coronation.

The Grand Pavilion of the Ricci estate had been transformed into a fairyland of white roses, crystal chandeliers, and glowing fairy lights. Two hundred of the most elite figures in New York society, combined with the sprawling, boisterous Ricci clan, filled the ballroom with the hum of laughter, clinking champagne flutes, and classical string music.

Elena’s seventieth birthday was an undisputed triumph.

And at the center of it all stood Marco and me.

I wore a floor-length emerald silk gown that hugged my curves, paired with simple diamond drop earrings Marco had slipped onto my vanity that afternoon. When we had walked down the grand staircase together earlier that evening, a collective hush had fallen over the room. We didn't need to act anymore; the way Marco looked at me—possessive, adoring, and entirely consumed—was visible to every single person in the room.

Around 10:00 PM, the string quartet paused, and Marco took the microphone on the elevated stage to thank his mother.

“Seventy years of grace, strength, and unconditional love,” Marco spoke, his rich voice carrying effortlessly across the ballroom as he stood with his arm draped casually around his mother’s shoulders. “Thank you for teaching this family what it means to stand tall, even when the world tries to break you.”

Polite, thunderous applause erupted. Elena beamed with pride, her eyes shining with tears as she looked up at her son.

Then, Marco turned his gaze out into the crowd, finding me standing near the edge of the dance floor.

“And to the woman who has quietly brought more light into my life than she will ever realize,” Marco continued, his green eyes locking onto mine with breathtaking intensity. “Thank you for staying. Thank you for being my anchor.”

My breath hitched. The entire ballroom turned to stare at me, whispering and smiling warmly. I felt like I was floating on air.

Until the side doors of the ballroom swung open with a loud, deliberate crash.

The music stuttered and died.

All heads turned toward the entrance. Walking down the center aisle with a predatory, theatrical swagger was Julian Vance, flanked by two corporate lawyers and holding a thick manila folder in his hand. Behind him, looking smug and vindicated, stood Sofia Ricci.

Marco’s face went instantly, terrifyingly cold. The relaxed, affectionate CEO vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by the dangerous mafia kingpin who ruled the New York underworld.

“Julian,” Marco said into the microphone, his voice dropping an octave, turning the temperature in the room down by twenty degrees. “You must be lost. The service entrance is around the back.”

“I’m exactly where I need to be, Marco,” Julian sneered, stepping right up to the base of the stage. He held up the manila folder. “I thought the great Marco Ricci was untouchable. I thought his new corporate strategy was bulletproof. But it turns out, the brilliant billionaire was just taking advice from his little assistant.”

A cold dread pooled in my stomach.

“Get out of my mother’s house before I have you thrown into the ocean,” Marco warned, stepping down off the stage, his fists clenched at his sides.

“Oh, I’ll leave,” Julian laughed nastily, turning to address the stunned crowd of elites and family members. “As soon as everyone here realizes that the great romance you’re celebrating tonight is nothing more than an elaborate corporate fraud! You hired your assistant to play girlfriend for the weekend so you could launder insider knowledge about our upcoming Brooklyn port acquisition through her personal accounts!”

Silence swallowed the ballroom—a thick, suffocating vacuum where nobody dared to breathe.

My heart stopped.

What?

I stared at Julian in absolute horror. Insider knowledge? Port acquisition? I didn't even know what our port acquisition accounts were called!

“It’s a complete lie,” I choked out, my voice trembling as heads snapped in my direction, suspicion and shock rippling through the crowd.

“Is it?” Julian crowed triumphantly, pulling a stack of printed bank statements and fabricated email transcripts from his folder and tossing them onto the nearest cocktail table. “We have records of encrypted wire transfers moving from shell companies directly into Miss Emily Vance’s—oh wait, Emily’s—personal savings account over the last six months! She’s a corporate spy planted inside Ricci Holdings!”

Gasps echoed across the room. Elena clutched her chest, her face turning deathly pale.

Panic clawed at my throat. I looked wildly from the scattered papers to Marco, terrified that even for a second, he might believe the impossible lie.

Marco stood frozen on the steps of the stage. His green eyes darted to the papers, then to me.

“Marco...” I whispered, my voice breaking as tears spilled over my lashes. “You know that’s not true. You know I didn't—you know where every dollar in my account comes from—”

Marco didn't answer immediately. The terrifying silence stretched out like a razor wire between us, threatening to slice my heart in two.
