Chapter 3 - The Broken KingAdrian walked to the foot of the mahogany table, pulled out the heavy leather executive chair opposite mine, and sat down.

Up close, the damage of the last three days was starkly visible on his face. The pristine, immaculate boss of Moretti Holdings looked exhausted. Dark purple hollows were carved beneath his dark eyes, his jaw was covered in dark stubble, and his hands, resting flat on the mahogany table, were rigid with tension.
“You’re sleeping in Lincoln Park,” Adrian said softly, his voice rough and gravelly. “The apartment building has two security guards at the front desk, but the rear fire escape lock is rusted. I had Marco replace the deadbolts this morning while you were out.”
A cold laugh escaped my lips. “Are you stalking me now, Adrian? Is that your new strategy?”
“I’m protecting you,” he snapped, his dark eyes flashing with sudden, defensive heat. “You walked out of a secure house with a target on your back, Claire! Do you have any idea how many enemies I have in this city? Do you have any idea what happens if someone realizes you’re living alone in a residential building without my detail?!”
“I wouldn't have a target on my back if my husband hadn't spent six months putting a bullet in our marriage!” I yelled back, my composure finally breaking, my voice ringing off the glass walls.
Adrian flinched. The anger drained from his face instantly, replaced by a hollow, broken despair that seemed to age him ten years in a second.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box. He slid it across the polished table toward me.
I didn't touch it. “What is that?”
“Your mother’s original emerald ring,” Adrian whispered, his voice trembling. “The one your father pawned ten years ago before he died. I spent six months tracking it down through a private collector in London. It arrived yesterday morning. It was supposed to be your second anniversary gift... before everything happened.”
I stared at the velvet box sitting on the polished wood. Ten years ago, when my family was drowning in debt following my father’s bankruptcy, my mother had been forced to sell her heirloom wedding ring to pay for my college tuition. I had wept for weeks over that loss.
Adrian had remembered. He had spent half a million dollars tracking it down across an ocean just to put it back on my finger.
And yet, during those exact same six months... he had been driving to River North to visit Sofia Russo.
The cruelty of the contrast tore a sharp, agonizing sob from my throat.
“Take it back, Adrian,” I whispered, tears finally overflowing my lashes, running hot down my cheeks.
“Claire... please—”
“Take it back!” I sobbed, pushing the velvet box back across the table toward him. “You don't get to buy your way out of this! You don't get to find my mother’s ring and pretend it erases the fact that another woman is carrying your child!”
Adrian stared at the velvet box. Slowly, his large, calloused hand reached out and closed over the wood, his knuckles turning marble white.
“I offered her five million dollars this morning,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a flat, dead register that made my blood run cold. “I offered Sofia five million dollars, a estate in Switzerland, and full financial custody of the child if she leaves the country permanently and surrenders all legal claims to the Moretti name.”
I looked up, wiping my eyes with the back of my hand. “And what did she say?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened until the bone looked ready to snap. “She refused. She called her uncle in Detroit.”
My breath hitched in my throat.
“Gianni Russo’s brother, Hector,” Adrian continued softly, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intense, terrifying seriousness. “Hector Russo just landed at O’Hare thirty minutes ago with twenty armed enforcers. He called a emergency meeting of the Tri-State Commission for eight o'clock tonight at the Italian Cultural Center.”
Adrian stood up slowly from his chair, buttoning his suit jacket.
“Sofia told her family that I forced her into an affair,” Adrian revealed, his tone dropping into a icy freeze. “She told them that I promised to divorce you, marry her, and merge the Moretti and Russo territories—and that I am now attempting to discard her and her unborn child.”

The full, horrifying scope of the trap suddenly clicked into place.
Sofia Russo hadn't just been a reckless mistress. She had been a Trojan horse—a calculated, brilliant maneuver executed by the Detroit syndicate to dismantle Adrian’s control over Chicago from the inside out.
