Chapter 4 - The Midnight Council

Down in the subterranean security vault of Croft Estate, the atmosphere was thick with betrayal. Gideon Locke paced across the concrete floor, his tactical boots clicking sharply, while a digital tablet on the steel desk flashed red with intercepted emergency transmissions.
“Vance’s private security detail just breached the outer perimeter gate,” one of the younger tech operators reported, his fingers flying across the console. “They’re citing an emergency health code violation under Tribunal Ordinance 44-B. They have a warrant to seize the estate.”
Gideon stopped pacing, his scarred face hardening into granite. “Marcus is moving too fast. He didn't wait for sunrise. He knows Kane is vulnerable, but he also knows Harper is still alive up there.”
“If Harper survives until dawn, the debt is legally void, and the Cascade merger contract falls through,” the operator noted. “Vance loses his claim on the shipping lanes.”
“Which is why they aren't coming to audit,” Gideon said grimly, drawing his heavy sidearm and checking the magazine. “They’re coming to assassinate Kane and frame the girl for it.”
Before the operator could respond, the heavy steel security door of the bunker shuddered under a massive, synchronized explosive charge.
Boom.
Sparks rained down from the ceiling conduits as the electronic locks failed. The door groaned, swung inward, and three armed mercenaries wearing the unmarked tactical gear of Vance Security poured into the room, assault rifles raised.
Gideon didn't hesitate. He dived behind the concrete master server rack, his sidearm barking twice in rapid succession. The lead mercenary dropped instantly, his chest plate smoking from the close-range impact.
The remaining two returned fire, chewing up the concrete wall and sending concrete dust flying into the air.
“Secure the data logs!” one mercenary shouted over the gunfire. “Find the financial transfer records between Richard Hayes and Marcus Vance! If we delete the paper trail, the merger goes through uncontested!”
Gideon leaned around the edge of the rack, squeezing off another round that clipped a mercenary’s shoulder, but he was pinned down. There were too many angles, and the bunker’s automated defense grid had been remotely disabled from an outside terminal.
The betrayal ran deeper than just Dominic Vance. Someone inside the Cascade Pack council had given them the master bypass codes.
Upstairs in the master suite, unaware of the firefight raging beneath their feet, Harper and Kane sat in the warmth of the hearth. The fever in Kane’s blood had subsided into a manageable hum, leaving him pale and exhausted, leaning back against the stone wall with his eyes closed.
“Vance is moving,” Kane said suddenly, his voice low and steady.
Harper looked up from the medical kit she had retrieved from the bathroom. “How do you know?”
“My pack bond,” Kane murmured, opening his golden eyes, which had returned to their natural, piercing clarity. “I can feel the perimeter wards flickering. Someone has breached the lower service tunnels.”
Harper stood up instantly, her defensive instincts flaring. “Gideon is down there.”
“Gideon can handle himself,” Kane replied, standing up with surprising grace despite his exhaustion. He towered over her, his imposing presence returning in full force, stripped of the sickness that had crippled him hours before. “The real question is why Vance is moving tonight instead of waiting for the morning tribunal.”
“Because of the debt,” Harper realized, her eyes widening. “If my father’s contract with Croft Industries contains a hidden clause that transfers ownership of Cascade’s land upon my death or disqualification, then Vance doesn't just want financial leverage—he wants our territory.”
Kane’s lips curled into a cold, dangerous smile. “Then it’s a good thing my future wife isn't planning on dying tonight.”
May you like
Harper paused, her breath catching at the word wife. Before she could process it, the smart-console on the wall chimed with a high-priority encrypted ping.
The screen flickered on to reveal Marcus Vance himself, smiling smugly into a high-definition camera from the lobby of the estate.
