Chapter 7 - The Unbroken Horizon

The night air was cool and crisp as autumn officially settled over the city, painting the campus grounds in deep shades of amber and gold.
It was Tuesday at precisely midnight.
Standing behind the old brick campus chapel, tucked away beneath the sprawling canopy of the historic oak trees, the familiar scent of damp earth and late-season foliage filled the air.
My heart beat a steady, hopeful rhythm against my ribs as I waited by the stone retaining wall.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind me.
I turned around.
There he stood. Wearing his familiar dark wool coat, his messy hair catching the pale glow of the overhead streetlamp, his right hand resting casually in his pocket.
Christopher stopped a few feet away, his hazel eyes searching my face with a quiet, profound vulnerability I had never seen in him before. He didn't rush toward me. He waited, giving me all the space in the world to decide whether to run into his arms or turn away forever.
“You're an idiot,” I whispered, my voice breaking slightly as tears welled up in my eyes.
A slow, tender smile spread across Christopher’s face—the genuine, real smile of the man I had loved for eight years, unmarred by lies or impostors.
“I know,” he murmured softly, closing the distance between us in two quick strides and wrapping his arms securely around my waist, pulling me tightly against his chest. “I am the biggest idiot in the world. But I swear to you, Penny... from this moment on, there are no more secrets. No more shadows. Just us.”
I buried my face against his shoulder, breathing in the familiar cedarwood scent that was uniquely, undeniably his.
Julian was locked away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary where he could never hurt anyone again. The nightmare of the doppelgänger was permanently buried in the past.

As Christopher tilted my chin up and pressed a gentle, lingering kiss to my lips, the campus bells chimed softly in the distance, marking the dawn of a brand-new chapter.
The past had been burned away by the fire of deception, but standing here in his arms beneath the open autumn sky, I knew our horizon was finally, beautifully unbroken.
