Chapter 4 - The Twin Deception

The air rushed out of my lungs as if I had been punched in the chest.

Brother.

Julian Vance. Not an intruder. Not an accidental car thief. An identical twin brother I had never known existed—or rather, a brother Christopher had deliberately erased from every family photo, every conversation, and every memory shared during our eight years together.

Before I could process the full, staggering weight of the discovery, the sharp click of the bedroom door turning open echoed through the quiet room.

I scrambled backward, frantically slamming the metal safe shut and dropping the dust ruffle just as the overhead light flickered on.

Christopher—or whoever was standing in the doorway—stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes dropped instantly to my trembling hands resting on the carpet near the edge of the bed. The warm, affectionate husband facade vanished in a single fraction of a second, replaced by a cold, predatory stillness that made my blood run ice-cold.

“What are you doing on the floor, Penelope?” he asked, his voice entirely devoid of its usual melodic cadence. It sounded flat, metallic, and sharp.

I pushed myself up onto my feet, my knees shaking so badly I could barely keep my balance. I kept my hands balled into tight fists at my sides to hide their tremors.

“I dropped my earring,” I lied, my voice sounding impossibly small. “It rolled under the bed frame.”

He didn't move. He stood in the doorway, blocking the only exit from the master bedroom, his dark hazel eyes studying my face with surgical precision.

“Did you find it?” he asked quietly, taking one deliberate step forward.

“No,” I whispered, staring straight into his eyes. “It must have rolled deeper toward the center.”

A slow, humorless smile touched the corners of his mouth—a smile I had never seen the real Christopher make in all our years of marriage. It was arrogant, sharp, and terrifyingly cold.

“You’re a terrible liar, Penelope,” he said softly, closing the distance between us with frightening speed. “I always loved that about you. You wear your entire soul right on your face.”

I bolted toward the open bathroom door, intending to lock myself inside, but he was faster. Before my fingers could grip the wooden edge, his hand shot out, catching my arm in an iron grip and spinning me around, pinning me gently but inescapably against the bedroom wall.

He didn't squeeze hard enough to bruise, but the sheer dominance in his posture left me completely paralyzed.

“Let me go,” I choked out, tears of fear stinging the corners of my eyes.

“Why would I let you go now, after we’ve come this far?” he murmured, his face inches from mine. “Do you have any idea how long I watched you? How long I studied every single nuance of his life, his mannerisms, his speech, his habits, just so I could step into his shoes and finally take what should have been mine from the very beginning?”

“You’re Julian,” I breathed, the name tasting like ash on my tongue.

The impostor tilted his head, a dark, twisted pride flashing in his eyes. “Christopher was always the golden boy. Perfect job, perfect penthouse apartment, perfect wife. While I spent years rotting away in federal prison for crimes he helped cover up and walk away from. We share identical DNA, Penelope. Same face, same blood type, same surgical scars. Even the medical examiners couldn't tell us apart once my poor, foolish brother met his unfortunate end on Interstate 95 last night.”

My heart stopped beating. “You... you murdered him?”

“We had a disagreement,” Julian corrected smoothly, his expression chillingly casual. “He wanted to turn me in after I tracked him down. The truck crash was just... an unfortunate convergence of momentum and gravity. His phone, his wallet, his ring—they were simply paying the toll for my new beginning.”

“The police know about the tracking data,” I lied desperately, grasping at any straw that might keep me alive. “They have forensic teams combing through the wreckage right now. They’ll figure out the truth within hours.”

Julian let out a low, dark chuckle. He reached up with his free hand, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead with terrifying intimacy.

“Let them look,” he whispered. “By the time the lab results come back, you and I will be halfway across the Pacific on a private yacht, starting our brand-new life together as man and wife. Just you and me, Penny.”

May you like

Before I could scream, before I could kick or fight back, his hand moved with lightning speed, pressing a small, cotton pad soaked in a pungent, sweet-smelling chemical across my mouth and nose.

The frantic instinct to struggle surged through me, but within three seconds, my limbs turned to lead. The overhead lights began to spin, melting into blinding streaks of white, and the last thing I heard before slipping into darkness was Julian’s low, whispered voice humming a familiar melody right beside my ear.
