Chapter 3 - The Gathering in NorfolkBy 1:30 AM, the rain storm over the Chesapeake Bay had turned into a steady, freezing drizzle that painted the highway in streak after streak of dark reflection.

My luxury sedan pulled into the private subterranean garage of the Sterling & Vance Building in downtown Norfolk.
Sitting in the passenger seat beside me was Lauren Pierce. Behind us, in a secondary security vehicle driven by Arthur Sterling’s chief of private security, was Daniel. He hadn't been allowed to touch his phone, his laptop, or his private car keys since leaving Room 817.
We took the private executive elevator directly to the twelfth floor.
The doors parted to reveal the grand, sunless conference suite of my lead corporate attorney, Arthur Sterling.
At seventy-two, Arthur was a legendary figure in Virginia corporate law—a silver-haired, iron-jawed veteran who had drafted my father's original commercial partnership deeds thirty years ago.
Arthur sat at the head of a thirty-foot glass conference table, drinking black tea, while two senior forensic accountants from his firm reviewed the digital files I had uploaded from my phone during the drive from Virginia Beach.
When we walked into the room, Arthur stood up slowly, smoothing the front of his dark suit jacket. His sharp blue eyes scanned my face, taking in my pale skin, my dark coat, and the absolute, unshakeable composure I held.
"Claire," Arthur spoke, his baritone deep, warm, and steady. "Are you alright, my dear?"
"I am completely clear, Arthur," I answered, stepping up to the glass table, setting my leather tote bag flat on the surface. "We have the original Cayman transfer deeds, the forged medical evaluation, and thirty-four minutes of 4K video recording from Room 817."
Daniel was led into the room by Arthur's security chief. He looked pathetic—wearing his rumpled trousers and a wrinkled shirt, no tie, his hair messy, his hands trembling as he looked at the four attorneys sitting around the table.
Arthur looked at Daniel, his blue eyes turning into two pieces of razor-sharp ice.
"Daniel," Arthur said softly, every word dropped like an iron weight into the silent room. "Sit down."
Daniel didn't argue. He pulled out a leather armchair at the far end of the table and collapsed into it like a man sentenced to the gallows.
Lauren stepped forward, setting her private laptop flat on the glass table between Arthur and me.
"Mr. Sterling," Lauren announced cleanly, her voice professional and absolute. "As the senior receiver for Pierce & Associates, I am officially executing an emergency corporate revocation of Vance Global Holdings based on material fraud and forged proxy credentials."
Daniel gasped, his head snapping up from the table. "Lauren! No! You can't do that! My retainer agreement—"
May you like
"Your retainer agreement was voided the moment you presented fraudulent medical records to my compliance board, Daniel," Lauren interrupted smoothly. "I have already transferred the Cayman holding keys directly to Mrs. Vance's private legal counsel."
Daniel stared at her, then looked at Arthur, then looked at me—realizing in a single, catastrophic second that the woman he had recruited to lock me out of my empire had just handed me the keys to his destruction.
