Chapter 6 - The Unbroken NameOne year later, on a bright, golden afternoon in early October, the grand garden behind the Moretti estate was filled with white roses, golden sunlight, and the peaceful sound of a cello playing near the marble fountain.

Fifty close friends, family associates, and trusted staff sat in simple wooden chairs set up along the green lawn.

I stood near the central marble arch wearing an immaculate navy suit, my slate-gray eyes fixed on the terrace doors.

The heavy glass doors swung open.

Walking out onto the stone patio, wearing a beautiful, simple white dress, holding my hand tightly, was twelve-year-old Lily.

Behind us, carried in the arms of my underboss Enzo, was fifteen-month-old Julian Jr.—wearing a tiny suit that matched mine, clapping his small hands as he looked at the bright balloons decorating the trees.

We walked up to the podium where Judge Jonathan Sterling—the senior family court judge of Cook County—stood waiting with an official leather binder.

Judge Sterling smiled warmly, opening the ceremonial book.

“We are gathered here today,” Judge Sterling announced, his voice carrying clearly over the sunlit garden, “to finalize the formal, legal adoption and guardianship decree for Lily Vance-Moretti and Julian Moretti Jr.”

The judge looked down at Lily, his eyes kind and respectful.

“Lily,” Judge Sterling asked gently. “Do you freely choose to take the name Moretti, and to accept Dominic Moretti as your legal father, guardian, and protector for all the days of your life?”

Lily looked up at me—her dark hazel eyes shining with tears of pure, radiant joy—and squeezed my hand with all the strength in her small frame.

“I do, Your Honor,” Lily spoke, her voice clear, strong, and echoing across the sunlit garden. “He saved my life. He gave me a home. He is my father.”

I dropped to one knee on the soft grass, pulling my daughter into my arms, holding her tight against my heart as tears of pure, unreserved love spilled over my lashes.

“By the authority vested in me by the State of Illinois,” Judge Sterling smiled, stamping the heavy gold seal onto the decree, “I now declare Lily and Julian Jr. to be the lawful, unbroken children and sole heirs of Dominic Moretti.”

The entire garden erupted into a loud, joyful round of applause, guests standing up to cheer, as Marco and Enzo raised their glasses in a proud, triumphant toast.
