Chapter 4 - The Demands of the MatriarchThe silence inside Room 408 stretched so long that the hum of the warming light inside the incubator sounded like a roaring wind.

I stayed on my knees on the cold linoleum floor, looking at my wife, then looking through the plastic glass at my daughter.

Lily was impossibly tiny. Her little hands were folded near her chest, an oxygen tube taped gently near her small nose, her tiny heart beating in a steady, miraculous rhythm against the monitors.

She possessed my dark hair. But her delicate features, her soft jawline, and the gentle curve of her brow belonged entirely to Grace.

"What do I have to do, Grace?" I whispered, my voice thick with a desperate, absolute surrender. "Tell me what to do. I will give up the shipping terminals. I will step down from the council. I will walk away from every dollar in New York if it means I can hold my daughter and come home to you."

Grace turned her hazel eyes back to mine, searching my face with a deep, chilling clarity.

"You think stepping down is that simple, Vincent?" Grace asked softly. "You built a war machine for twelve years. If you simply walk away tomorrow, Marcus Moretti and the secondary syndicates will tear this city apart trying to take your territory. They will target Lily the second she leaves this hospital."

"I will execute every man who looks at her!" I roared in a quiet, terrifying whisper, my storm-gray eyes burning with dark fire.

"And that is why you cannot be her father right now," Grace countered cleanly, her voice rising with an unshakeable, sovereign power. "Because your answer to everything is blood and war. You think like a Don, Vincent. You don't think like a father."

She pulled a thick legal binder from the side table, setting it flat onto her lap.

"These are my conditions, Vincent," Grace announced, looking straight into my eyes.

"Name them," I replied without a second of hesitation.

TRANSFER OF THE VANCENT TRUST — Full legal ownership of the primary real estate holdings, including the Lake Forest estate and the Brooklyn shipping docks, permanently assigned to an irrevocable trust managed exclusively by Grace Romano for Lily Romano.

TOTAL DISMANTLING OF THE SECONDARY OPERATIONS — Complete divestment from all illegal gambling, loan, and unregistered transport operations within ninety days, converting the Romano network into a legitimate maritime logistics corporation.

FULL SURRENDER OF EXECUTIVE COMMAND — Vincent Romano will serve as a non-voting advisory director, while the primary voting proxy of the board is assigned to a council led by Frank and overseen by Grace.

SUPERVISED VISITATION — Vincent Romano will be permitted two hours of supervised visitation with Lily Romano twice a week inside the hospital, under the direct supervision of Grace and her legal team.

I listened to the four conditions.

In the criminal world, those four pages represented the total, unconditional surrender of an empire that had taken thirty years of blood to build. Any other crime boss in New York would have ordered his legal team to contest the petition instantly.

I reached out my hand, taking the silver pen resting on the binder.

I didn't read the fine print. I didn't consult Frank standing outside the door.

I signed my name across the bottom of every page with a firm, unshakeable stroke, stamping my official signet ring into the blue wax seal.

"It's done, Grace," I said softly, handing the binder back to her. "The empire is yours. My daughter's future is safe."

Grace looked at the signed pages, then looked down at my trembling hands. A faint, tragic shadow crossed her pale features.

"You signed it without arguing," Grace whispered softly.

"I signed it because twelve years ago, I swore to protect you," I answered, looking straight into her eyes. "And today... I am finally keeping my promise."
