Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Vance & MitchellBy 8:00 PM, the atmosphere in our living room had transformed completely.

The blush-colored baby shower decorations had been stripped down and thrown away. In their place sat three high-end encrypted laptops, two portable printers, and a secure satellite uplink terminal brought in by Gerald’s private response team.

Gerald himself—now seventy-two years old, silver-haired, impeccably dressed in a Savile Row three-piece suit, and radiating an aura of terrifying legal competence—sat in the center of the sofa, scrolling through a thick portfolio of financial documents.

My father stood by the window, while Chloe sat nearby, nervously holding a cup of chamomile tea.

I stood by the fireplace, my arms crossed over my growing belly, watching Gerald work.

“Well,” Gerald murmured, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses as he tapped a stylus against his tablet screen. “Ethan Mitchell is remarkably ambitious for a man with zero original talent. He thought he was playing four-dimensional chess against the Vance and Mitchell families. In reality, he was playing checkers with a loaded grenade.”

“Tell me what you found, Gerald,” I said calmly.

“Everything,” Gerald replied, looking up with a razor-sharp smile. “Ethan didn't just embezzle funds from Vanguard Biotech. To keep his clinical trials afloat while hiding his secret life with Vanessa Vance, he illegally transferred four million dollars from Mitchell-Vance Medical Trust accounts—accounts that are legally tied to your personal inheritance and protected by federal trust laws.”

My father slammed his fist against the windowsill. “That’s grand larceny! That’s a federal penitentiary offense!”

“It gets better,” Gerald continued smoothly, swiping to a new document. “Arthur Vance—Vanessa’s father—wasn't just helping Ethan secure a corporate merger. He was using Ethan’s company as a tax shelter to launder kickbacks from foreign pharmaceutical suppliers. I have bank logs, encrypted email threads, and shell-company registry numbers that prove both Ethan and Arthur have been systematically cooking the books for over three years.”

Chloe gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. “My god... they could both go to prison for twenty years.”

“At least,” Gerald nodded. “Which brings us to the house. Ethan thinks he used a clever legal loophole to transfer the deed to Vanguard Holdings LLC. However—” Gerald tapped a glowing red verification stamp on his screen “—the primary capital used to purchase this estate seven years ago didn't come from Ethan’s savings. It came directly from a private trust established by your grandfather on the day you were born. Under Section 14 of that trust, any property purchased with its funds cannot be alienated, transferred, or seized without the unanimous written consent of the primary beneficiary.”

He looked up at me, his eyes gleaming with professional admiration.

“And you, Ava, are the sole primary beneficiary. Ethan’s signature on the corporate deed transfer is legally null and void. In fact, the moment he attempted to forge that transfer, he committed corporate fraud against your personal trust.”

I walked slowly over to the coffee table, looking down at the screen displaying the financial audit.

For months, Ethan had played the role of the devoted, hardworking husband while secretly plotting to strip me of my home, my inheritance, and my dignity, trading me off like a used asset to appease his corporate masters and his secret pregnant mistress.

He thought I was weak. He thought I would cry, pack a suitcase, and slink away in shame, leaving him to enjoy the stolen spoils of my family’s empire.

He had no idea who he was messing with.

“What is our first move, Gerald?” I asked quietly.

Gerald closed his tablet with a soft, satisfying click. “We don't warn them. We don't negotiate. Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, while Ethan is at the corporate board meeting at Vance Pharmaceuticals trying to finalize your eviction, we execute a federal asset freeze on every single account he touches. We seize control of Vanguard Biotech, audit their research logs, and have federal marshals slap both Ethan and Arthur Vance with emergency indictments for financial fraud and trust embezzlement.”

I nodded slowly, feeling a cold, calm peace settle over my heart.

“Do it,” I said.
