Chapter 5 - The Morning of MiraclesI slept for three hours that night—the deepest, most peaceful sleep I had known since Caroline died.

At 7:00 AM on Christmas morning, the golden winter sun broke over the snow-covered grounds of the estate, casting warm amber light through the grand windows.
I stood in the main living room beside a massive fourteen-foot balsam fir tree that my staff had decorated three weeks earlier per my sister's insistence.
Lying beneath the glowing branches were thirty high-end wrapped packages—gifts I had instructed my corporate assistant, Sarah, to order late last night using my private emergency courier service.
There were pink winter coats, warm boots, cashmere sweaters, educational tablets, art supplies, a massive dollhouse, and a brand-new leather purse for Maya containing a thick white envelope.
THUD. THUD. THUD.
Small, hurried footsteps pattered down the grand mahogany staircase.
Seven-year-old Lily came running into the living room, wearing a warm pair of new red fleece pajamas that had been left outside her door.
She stopped dead in her tracks, her small mouth opening in an 'O' of absolute, breathtaking wonder as she looked at the magnificent glowing Christmas tree and the sea of wrapped presents beneath it.
"MOMMY! LOOK!" Lily shrieked in pure, unadulterated joy, her clear voice ringing through the tall ceilings like a silver bell. "SANTA FOUND US! HE FOUND THE MAP!"
Maya walked down the stairs behind her, wearing a soft gray wool sweater dress, her dark hair brushed glossy, her face radiant and completely free from the suffocating terror of yesterday.
She stopped beside me near the fireplace, watching her daughter fall flat onto the rug, ripping open wrapped packages with wild, giggling enthusiasm.
Maya looked up at me, her hazel eyes swimming with fresh, warm tears. "Arthur... you... you didn't have to do all this... this is too much..."
"It isn't enough, Maya," I corrected softly, reaching into my suit jacket pocket, pulling out a sleek black leather folder.
I laid the folder gently into her hands.
"What is this?" Maya asked, her fingers trembling as she opened the seal.
Inside lay three certified legal documents:
A DEED OF CONVEYANCE: Transferring full, unencumbered ownership of a charming three-bedroom brick cottage located five minutes down the road in Lancaster to Maya Miller.
A FULL DEBT CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE: Documenting the total two-hundred-thousand-dollar medical debt owed by the Miller family paid in full by The Caroline Vance Charitable Trust.
AN EXECUTIVE EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT: Offering Maya the position of Chief Managing Director of The Caroline Vance Foundation, with a starting annual salary of ninety-five thousand dollars plus full medical benefits.
Maya’s jaw faltered. She stared at the legal documents, her breath catching in her throat, her entire body shaking in total, speech-bound shock.

"Arthur... no... my God, no..." Maya sobbed, dropping her face into her hands, her body swaying slightly as the weight of her suffering was lifted forever. "I can't take this... I can't repay you..."
"You don't repay a gift, Maya," I promised gently, wrapping my broad, warm arm around her shoulder, pulling her into a quiet, comforting embrace. "Three years ago, I lost my wife, and this house became a tomb. Last night, you and Lily gave this old man his life back."
