Chapter 4 - The AwakeningBy 7:00 A.M., the blizzard over Chicago had passed, leaving the city blanketed in a blinding, sunlit white.

Inside Trauma Room 4 at St. Matthew Medical Center, the bright morning light streamed through the high windows, illuminating the quiet room.
I sat in the chair beside Elena's bed, my hand still holding hers, my suit rumpled, my eyes heavy with exhaustion. I had returned from Pier 42 three hours ago, refusing to leave her side for a single second.
A soft, shallow intake of breath broke the quiet rhythm of the room.
Ah...
I stiffened instantly, my head snapping up.
Elena’s long, dark lashes fluttered softly against her bruised cheeks. Her pale fingers twitched inside my grip. A small, faint whimper escaped her lips as her hazel eyes slowly opened, squinting against the bright sunlight.
"Elena..." I breathed out, my voice thick with emotion as I stood up, leaning over the bed, my heart hammering against my ribs.
She blinked several times, her gaze wandering confusedly across the white ceiling, the IV lines, the heart monitor, and finally settling on my face.
For three agonizing seconds, she didn't speak. She just stared at me—at my disheveled hair, my bloodshot eyes, and my hand holding hers.
"Nico...?" her voice was a tiny, hoarse whisper, raw and breathless.
"I'm here, my love," I choked out, pressing my forehead gently against her knuckles. "I'm right here. You're safe. You're in the hospital."
Elena pulled her hand back slightly, a sudden, cold shadow of pain and betrayal crossing her beautiful features as memory returned.
"Why... why are you here?" she whispered, her voice trembling with five months of buried heartbreak. "You told me... you told me our marriage was a lie. You told me you didn't want me anymore."
Every word she spoke felt like a serrated blade tearing through my chest, but I didn't pull away. I deserved every drop of her anger.
"I lied to you, Elena," I confessed, tears spilling down my cheeks as I looked into her hazel eyes. "I lied to you because Dominic Falco was putting hit squads on my family's inner circle. I thought if I divorced you, if I made the world believe I didn't care about you, you would be safe from my world."
Elena’s eyes widened slightly in shock. "You... you pushed me away to protect me?"
"It was the biggest mistake of my life," I wept softly, kissing her knuckles repeatedly. "I threw you into the cold, and I almost lost you last night."
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. Her hand instinctively moved down toward her flat stomach, her eyes wide with sudden, terrifying panic.
"The baby...!" she gasped, her voice pitching upward into a terrified squeak. "Nico! Is... is our baby okay?!"
I quickly reached out, placing my hand gently over hers, resting our palm against her lower belly.
"Our baby is strong, Elena," I promised, a soft, radiant smile breaking through my tears as I pointed to the secondary monitor displaying the steady one-hundred-and-forty-bpm pulse. "Listen. That's our child's heartbeat. Sixteen weeks. The doctor checked everything. Our baby is safe."
Elena let out a ragged, heartbroken sob, burying her face in her hands as tears overflowed her lashes.
I leaned down, wrapping my broad arms around her fragile frame, pulling her gently against my chest, being careful not to touch her bruised shoulder. She clung to my shirt collar with all her strength, weeping against my neck, releasing five months of quiet, lonely terror into my arms.

"I missed you so much, Nico..." she wept into my skin. "I was so scared..."
"I know, my love," I whispered into her dark hair, holding her tight, feeling her heart beating against mine. "I know. But it's over now. You and our child are coming home."
