Chapter 2 - The Face in the MoonlightThe moonlight cut sharply across the pillow, illuminating the baby's sleeping features. I expected to see a stranger's face, or perhaps features belonging to a woman I had never met—a stark, undeniable monument to my husband's betrayal.

Instead, the infant turned slightly, his tiny hand opening in his sleep.

And I saw the birthmark.

Just beneath the baby’s left ear was a distinct, crescent-shaped cluster of three small freckles—the exact, mirror-image mark that Eric’s grandmother had carried, and that Eric had traced on my shoulder during our honeymoon in Amalfi.

My knees wobbled. The room seemed to tilt sideways.

This wasn't the child of some random mistress. This infant possessed genetic markers so specific to Eric’s hidden lineage that the mere sight of them felt like a lightning strike inside my brain. But how? If Eric had no family, where had this baby come from? Why was he here in our bed, treated with such familiar, desperate care, yet kept a complete secret from me?

Before I could process the terrifying paradox, Eric stirred.

He groaned softly, his broad shoulders shifting beneath the duvet. He blinked against the dim light, his eyes heavy with sleep, and instinctively reached out his hand. His palm didn't land on my side of the bed—it hovered protectively over the infant, his thumb lightly stroking the baby’s cheek with a tenderness that broke my heart into a thousand jagged pieces.

“It’s okay, little man,” Eric murmured, his voice thick with exhaustion and an agonizing, fierce devotion. “Daddy's right here. I’ve got you.”

Daddy.

The word dropped into the silent bedroom like a heavy stone.

He had called himself daddy. Not “we.” Not “our.” He spoke with the absolute, terrifying ownership of a man protecting his entire world.

I stepped backward out of the moonlight, retreating into the deep shadows near the bedroom door, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I couldn't face him yet. I didn't have the emotional armor to survive whatever lie he would spin if I confronted him in the dark.

I turned and fled down the hallway, grabbing my suitcase from the foyer, and slipped out of the house into the cool La Jolla night air. I drove my car blindly down the winding coastal highway until I reached a desolate overlook where the Pacific crashed violently against the rocks below.

Sitting in the driver's seat with my hands gripping the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned white, I forced my brain to work.

Eric was a billionaire who controlled vast networks of private investigators, tech security firms, and corporate intelligence. If he wanted to hide something from me—truly hide something—he could do it with military precision. But why would he lie about a child? Why would he cancel our adoption consultation just two months ago, claiming we weren't "emotionally ready," only to sneak an infant into our home while I was trapped in New York?

The betrayal felt cold and absolute. But underneath the pain, a cold, investigative fury began to take root.

If Eric wouldn't tell me the truth willingly, I was going to rip his perfect software empire apart until I found out who this baby belonged to, and what my husband was hiding in the dark.
