Chapter 4 - The Line in the SandThe Brooklyn shipping terminal was shrouded in a thick, sulfurous fog coming off the East River. Industrial floodlights cast long, geometric beams across rows of stacked metal shipping containers, illuminating the wet asphalt below.

Vincent didn't leave Emma and me behind at the mansion. With Marcus attempting a full-scale mutiny, the estate was no longer secure. We sat in the back of an armored black SUV parked fifty yards from the main warehouse, flanked by four of Vincent's most loyal enforcers.

Through the reinforced, tinted glass, I watched as Vincent, accompanied only by Enzo, walked steadily toward the center of the docks where Marcus stood surrounded by twenty armed men.

"Are we going to be okay, Mommy?" Emma whispered, clutching her new music box tightly against her chest.

"Mr. Caruso is going to handle it, baby," I said, holding her close, praying that my words were true.

Outside, the confrontation escalated quickly. Marcus stepped forward, his gold watch gleaming beneath the floodlights, a arrogant, mocking sneer on his face.

"You've gone soft, Vincent!" Marcus's voice echoed across the open terminal. "You let a housekeeper's child order you around in front of the entire council! You're living in the past, weeping over a dead girl while the city moves on without you!"

Enzo reached for his shoulder holster, but Vincent held up a single hand, stopping his security chief.

Vincent took two slow steps toward Marcus, completely unbothered by the twenty weapons pointed directly at his chest.

"I built this syndicate on blood and discipline, Marcus," Vincent said, his voice carrying effortlessly through the foggy night. "And for forty years, I believed that fear was the only foundation that could hold it together. But fear doesn't build loyalty. It only builds cowards who wait for a man to turn his back."

"Then shoot me!" Marcus spat, gesturing to his men. "Because none of us are bowing to a ghost anymore!"

Vincent looked past Marcus, addressing the twenty men standing behind him. "Every man here took an oath to the Caruso name. You took that oath because I guaranteed your families would be protected, fed, and respected. Look at Marcus. He strikes women, he threatens children, and he trades honor for profit. Is that the man you want leading your children's future?"

Silence fell over the docks, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the foghorns on the river.

One by one, the men surrounding Marcus began lowering their weapons.

"What are you doing?!" Marcus screamed, turning wildly to look at his crew. "Raise your guns! I'm paying you twice what he gives you!"

"They aren't loyal to your money, Marcus," Vincent said coldly, stepping up until he was inches from the traitor. "They're loyal to the family. Something you never understood."

Enzo stepped forward, grabbing Marcus by the collar and stripping the gold watch from his wrist before forcing him down onto his knees in the wet asphalt.

Vincent didn't draw a weapon. He looked down at the man who had tried to tear his empire apart, his eyes devoid of hatred—holding only profound, cold authority.

"You are stripped of your rank, your accounts, and your territory," Vincent announced. "You will leave New York before sunrise. If you ever set foot in this city again, there will be no sit-downs, no council votes, and no mercy."
