Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost EstateBy 2:00 AM, the long, winding driveway of the Moretti Estate in Upper Bedford, New York, was illuminated by flickering gas lanterns and guarded by ten armed Vance Security operators. The massive stone manor, surrounded by towering winter pines, had been quiet and sunless for twelve long years following Sofia's death.

Tonight, for the first time in over a decade, warm yellow light poured from the high arched windows of the grand study.

Harper sat on a plush velvet sofa near the crackling fireplace, wrapped in a heavy dark cashmere blanket provided by Lorenzo’s staff, sipping a mug of hot chamomile tea. Her worn waitress flats had been replaced by soft leather slippers, and the exhausted, panicked shadow in her brown eyes was slowly melting under Lorenzo’s steady, watchful presence.

Across the room stood Lorenzo, wearing a crisp white shirt with his sleeves rolled up, revealing faint, dark tattoos running up his muscular forearms. Beside his desk sat Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, an independent legal strategist who held the keys to Manhattan's financial courts.

Bridget opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the marble coffee table before Lorenzo and Harper:

"Don Moretti, Miss Hayes," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Vincent Lombardi’s underground lending operations and his recent commercial acquisitions is complete."

Lorenzo leaned against the corner of his mahogany desk, his arms folded across his broad chest, his gaze fixed on Harper. "Explain it to her, Bridget."

Bridget tapped the digital screens:

THE PREDATORY EXTORTION LOG: Certified evidence proving the $80,000 debt attributed to Leo Hayes was completely fabricated using forged compound interest clauses and illegal loan-sharking rates.

THE EMBEZZLED MARITIME TRUST: Proof that Vincent Lombardi and Frankie Lombardi diverted $45 million from the Hudson River Commercial Berths—which rightfully belonged to the Moretti-Hayes Educational Trust established by Harper's late father fifteen years ago.

THE KIDNAPPING PROTOCOL: Intercepted wiretaps capturing Frankie Lombardi planning to abduct Harper Hayes after her shift, forcing her into a fraudulent settlement agreement to seize her father’s remaining real estate deeds.

Harper gasped, her cup trembling in her saucer. "My father's real estate deeds...? My father was an architect! He built the original pier structures for the city before he passed away!"

"And Vincent Lombardi stole his legacy while you were working double shifts at nineteen dollars an hour to pay off a fake debt," Lorenzo revealed, his deep voice dipping into an apocalyptic, lethal register that dropped the room's temperature to zero.

Tears spilled over Harper’s lashes, but they were no longer tears of helpless terror. They were tears of profound, long-suppressed rage.

Lorenzo walked across the room, dropping flat onto one knee in front of her sofa. He reached out, his broad, warm palms taking her small hands into his own, pressing his forehead gently against her knuckles.

"They used your kindness against you, Harper," Lorenzo promised, looking into her hazel eyes with a fierce, diamond-hard devotion that made her heart leap in her chest. "They thought a young waitress had no power. Tomorrow morning, I put the entire weight of the Moretti name behind you."
