Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage CracksVincent stared at Eleanor Shaw as if she were a ghost materialized straight out of his worst nightmares. In Chicago legal circles, Eleanor’s name was synonymous with career destruction. She didn't just win divorces; she systematically dismantled high-net-worth men who thought their money made them immune to the law.

“I’m not signing anything,” Vincent spat, recovering a shred of his arrogant composure as he glared at the manila folder. “This is a ambush. Elena, you’re making a massive mistake. You have no grounds for a contested divorce, and you certainly don't have custody rights to—'”
“Mr. Carter,” Eleanor interrupted, her tone cool, level, and entirely unbothered by his outburst. She flipped open the manila folder, revealing page after page of dense financial printouts, bank statements, and corporate signatures. “Let’s review your current legal exposure, shall we?”
Eleanor slid the top document across the tray toward him.
“Page one outlines the forensic audit of Carter Holdings LLC, specifically detailing the systematic funneling of marital assets into personal accounts associated with Ms. Tiffany Davis—your executive assistant and, as of three weeks ago, the registered co-owner of a luxury condominium in the Gold Coast purchased entirely with corporate escrow funds.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened so hard I thought his teeth might crack. He didn't look at the paper; he stared directly at Eleanor with naked hostility.
“That’s circumstantial,” Vincent hissed. “Corporate restructuring happens all the time. It’s none of her business.”
“It becomes very much her business,” Eleanor continued smoothly, turning the page with agonizing slowness, “when those corporate funds were co-mingled with your joint marital accounts—accounts where your wife’s name is primary signatory. Furthermore, under Illinois law, dissipation of marital assets during the prenatal and postpartum period constitutes severe financial misconduct. Which brings us to page fourteen.”
Eleanor tapped her manicured fingernail against a highlighted paragraph.
“That is a temporary restraining order issued this morning by Judge Harrison, freezing all personal accounts, commercial holdings, restaurant licenses, and construction escorts under your control. Effective as of 1:00 PM today, you cannot spend more than five hundred dollars a week without court approval.”
Vincent lunged forward, his hands slamming onto the edge of the rolling tray, sending the manila folder sliding.
“You can’t do that!” he roared, spittle flying from his lips. “I have payroll to meet on Friday! I have a restaurant opening in River North next month! My entire business infrastructure will collapse if my accounts are frozen!”
“Then I suggest you start liquidating your personal assets—starting with that condo in the Gold Coast,” Eleanor replied without blinking an eye. She closed the folder with a sharp thwack. “You have forty-eight hours to vacate the marital residence on Lake Shore Drive, Mr. Carter. Mrs. Carter has already retrieved her personal belongings and our client’s primary residence has been reassigned to her under emergency custody and housing provisions.”
Vincent spun around, his eyes locking onto me with a mixture of sheer betrayal and venomous rage.
“You planned this,” he whispered, his voice trembling with fury. “From the very beginning. You sat there pretending to be the sweet, quiet little wife while you were sharpening a knife behind my back.”
I slowly pushed myself up from the armchair, standing tall despite the dull ache in my abdomen. I looked him dead in the eye—the same man who had abandoned me while I hemorrhaged on an operating table, telling me to handle it.

“You taught me how to survive, Vincent,” I said softly, my voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable calm. “You taught me that when you bleed, nobody is coming to save you. So I learned how to stop my own bleeding. And now... I’m stopping yours.”
Vincent opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. For the first time in five years, the great Vincent Carter was completely, utterly speechless.
