Chapter 2 - The Serpent’s CallThe screen glowed in the dim bedroom, flashing my mother’s name like an incoming missile warning.

I stared at it, my thumb frozen over the glass. Beside me, Lily curled tighter against the mattress, her eyes wide with terror as she watched the phone vibrate against the nightstand.
“Don’t answer it, Adam,” she breathed, her fingers catching weakly at my sleeve. “She’ll know you’re here. She’ll know you know.”
“No,” I said, a cold, calculated fury freezing every drop of blood in my veins. “It’s time she learned that her control over my life ended the moment she stepped foot in this nursery.”
I swiped the green icon and brought the phone to my ear, keeping my voice dangerously flat. “You have perfect timing, Mother.”
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before Eleanor’s smooth, cultivated chuckle echoed through the speaker. It was a sound that had once represented safety and maternal pride; now, it sounded like the hiss of a nest of vipers.
“I always have good timing, darling,” my mother replied, her tone dripping with casual condescension. “I assume you’ve let yourself into the apartment? I assume you’ve noticed that your little pet hasn't been taking care of her surroundings properly?”
My jaw clenched so hard I thought my teeth might crack. “What did you do to my wife, Eleanor?”
“I saved you from a colossal mistake,” she sighed, sounding genuinely put-upon, as if she were discussing a minor administrative error at a board meeting. “That girl was never suited for our world, Adam. The bloodline we built over three generations cannot be tainted by common stock with hereditary vulnerabilities. The physician I brought—a very discreet man, I assure you—simply administered a mild sedative to ensure she understood the gravity of our family standards. It’s for the best. She’ll lose the child naturally, you can file for an amicable divorce citing irreconcilable differences, and we can all move on with our lives.”
The sheer, chilling detachment in her voice made the room spin. She was talking about our unborn baby—her own flesh and blood—as if it were a defective product she was returning to the manufacturer.
“You drugged her,” I whispered, the words tasting like ash. “You broke into our home, you assaulted my pregnant wife, and you think you can just sweep it under the rug like a spilled glass of wine?”
“Watch your tone with me, Adam,” Eleanor snapped, her icy composure cracking just enough to reveal the tyrant underneath. “Remember who built the foundation you’re standing on. Without the Carter name, you are nothing. That woman trapped you with a pregnancy to secure her future. I am merely correcting an error.”
“The only error here was letting you believe you had any power over my family,” I snarled, leaning close to the bed so Lily could hear every word. “Listen to me very carefully, Mother. Stay away from my wife. Stay away from my child. Because if you or your little doctor come within a mile of this apartment again, I won’t just cut you out of my life—I will personally hand every single financial record, shell company audit, and tax evasion document I have on your estate to the federal prosecutor’s office. Do you understand me?”
May you like
Silence stretched across the line—a heavy, suffocating silence. For the first time in her life, Eleanor didn't have a polished retort.
Before she could recover, I ended the call, powered the phone completely off, and threw it across the room against the baseboard.
