Chapter 3 - The Broken MaskThe silence in the dining room was so absolute that the distant patter of rain outside sounded like a drumroll of impending doom.

Sienna’s hand flew to her mouth, her eyes darting between Richard and me as if she were staring at a ghost rising from a freshly dug grave. Her pregnant belly heaved as she took a sharp, terrified breath.
“No... no, that’s impossible,” Sienna whispered, clutching the edge of the table so hard her knuckles turned white. “The doctors gave you ninety days! You looked like a corpse last week! You couldn't even walk down the stairs without crying!”
I reached the bottom of the staircase, my heels clicking sharply against the shattered glass on the floor as I stepped forward with complete, unshakeable composure.
“Ah, but miracles do happen, Sienna,” I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air like a razor-sharp blade, clear, strong, and entirely devoid of the frail raspiness they had grown accustomed to. “Or, in my case, medical competence.”
Richard finally found his voice, though it cracked with hysterical panic. He pointed a trembling finger at me, backing away until his spine hit the mahogany sideboard. “What is this? Some kind of sick joke? Are you wearing a wig? Are you hiring actors? Security! Get this—'
“There is no security, Richard,” I interrupted smoothly, stopping five feet from the head of the table. “Your private guards left twenty minutes ago after federal marshals served them with subpoenas for corporate tampering. Didn't your phone buzz?”
Richard fumbled frantically in his pockets, pulling out his smartphone. The screen was lit up with dozens of missed calls, red notification badges from his corporate banking apps, and urgent emails with subject lines marked ACCOUNT FROZEN and ASSET SEIZURE WARRANT.
His hands shook so violently he nearly dropped the device.
“What... what did you do?” Richard hissed, his face contorting from pale terror into ugly, desperate fury. He lunged forward, the old abusive instinct flaring up in his eyes just as it had the day he threw me against the hallway wall. “You bitch! You’ve been playing games while I’ve been running myself ragged keeping this household afloat? I’ll—”
He didn't finish the threat.
Before Richard could take another step, two heavy mahogany doors at the side of the dining room swung wide open. Two men in sharp dark suits—senior partners from my family’s legal firm, accompanied by a local county magistrate—stepped into the room.

“Step away from Mrs. Vance, Mr. Sterling,” the lead attorney commanded, his voice cold and authoritative. “Any further hostile movement on your part will be added to the criminal charges of domestic assault, witness intimidation, and physical battery.”
Richard froze, his fist clenched in mid-air, his expression twisting into sheer bewilderment as he realized the trap had snapped shut around him completely.
